The battle for the starting QB job is heating up in San Francisco. The 49ers’ rookie sensation Brock Purdy is recovering from elbow surgery and is expected to start throwing the football in July. On the other side, Trey Lance is seen working alongside the Super Bowl MVP and Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes in the off-season.

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Trey Lance as the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. After sitting behind Jimmy Garoppolo for almost a year, Lance won the starting QB job in 2022. Unfortunately for Lance, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in a week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks which kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

In the absence of Lance, Garoppolo took over the starting QB job. Everyone knew once Lance recovers from his injury he will take back the QB No.1 rule until Brock Purdy took over the league by storm. Just like Lance, Garoppolo also suffered a foot injury in the week 13 game against the Dolphins. After Garoppolo’s injury, the 49ers’ seventh-round draft pick Brock Purdy took over the starting QB role and never looked back.

Purdy played in 9 games for the 49ers and threw for 1374 and 13 touchdowns. Furthermore, Purdy was named the finalist for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award despite just starting 5 games in the regular season.

Just when it seemed like the 49ers have finally found their signal-caller, Purdy got injured in the NFC Championship leading them to lose that game. Now, Purdy who is recovering from his injury will be competing with Trey Lance for the starting QB job in San Francisco.

Amidst the quarterback battle in the 49ers camp, the former third overall draft pick Trey Lance was seen working out with the Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the off-season.

In a short clip that is being surfaced on social media, it seems like Trey Lance has worked on his throwing mechanics. Lance’s arm slot is visibly higher and his release has gotten quicker and his throwing motion looks similar to the Chiefs’ franchise QB Patrick Mahomes.

Fans on social media saw that clip and were ecstatic about the changes Lance has made to his throwing mechanics. If the 22-year-old can return to the field fully healthy, he has a better chance to win the starting QB role.
