Now that Aaron Rodgers has left the Green Bay Packers, Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings are in an ideal situation to take over the NFC North. The Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions are still in their rebuilding phase. The Vikings could use that to their advantage and control the division for the next couple of years.

However, it seems like the veteran QB Kirk Cousins has different ideas. Cousins, who will be a free agent in 2024, has confirmed he is not expecting to have contract extension talks with the Vikings this off-season. He is entering the final year of his contract and is seemingly betting on himself to get a big deal in the next off-season.

He hasn’t ruled out a return to Minnesota in 2024, but it seems like he’ll take a stab at free agency following this season. “I think we’ll probably talk about the contract next March,” Cousins told reporters on the final day of the Vikings’ mandatory minicamp. “Until then, [we’ll] just focus on this season and the job to do right now.”

Ever since Cousins joined the Vikings, he has been consistently a massive asset for the Minnesota-based football team. He has registered three Pro Bowl seasons during his 5-year stint with the Vikings so far.

However, it can’t be denied that Cousins has failed when it mattered the most in the playoffs. Even last season, the NFC North Champions’ title hopes ended with a questionable 3-yard check-down pass by Cousins on a 4th and 8th situation in the divisional round. It seems like the Vikings are already overpaying Cousins, and it would not be a good decision to give him a bigger contract in 2024.

The Vikings franchise QB Kirk Cousins seemingly electing to be a free agent in 2024 leads to NFL fans clowning him on social media. Cousins would be 35 years old in 2024, which might stop some teams from offering him a big multi-year deal.

And on the Vikings’ side, they don’t have a contingency plan if Cousins leave in 2024. They drafted the BYU QB Jaren Hall in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft but it’s highly unlikely he will be replacing the 4-time Pro Bowler as the starting QB. So, if Cousins leave in the next off-season, the Vikings will be in the market for a starting signal-caller.

Nonetheless, entering a contract year might motivate Cousins to perform at a high level in the next season. The Vikings are looking to defend their NFC North division title and make a deep postseason run in the upcoming season.
