The New York Jets stunned everyone during the 2023 NFL Draft by selecting the Iowa State defensive Will McDonald IV as their first-round pick. However, that surprise pick wasn’t the issue that caused outrage on social media.

The Jets draft room having a Ukrainian national flag beside the American flag caused quite a stir on social media. Some fans thrashed the Jets for having the Ukrainian flag in their war room. According to multiple reports, the Jets owner Woody Johnson’s wife is of Ukrainian descent and they both have been vocal about their support to Ukraine in their war against Russia.

Last year in February, Russia invaded Ukraine and both countries are at a full-blown war ever since. The Jets have been vocal about their support for Ukraine ever since the war started. During their week 3 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2022 regular season, the Jets wore Ukrainian flags on their helmet to raise awareness against the war in the Eastern European country.

“We have to keep awareness up. We’re not doing anything political. We’re only focusing on the humanitarian, doing as much to help them until they can go back to their country, to donate as much as we can, and by our donating, put it up on our website. It’s all we can do,” Johnson explained about his decision to display Ukrainian flags in their week 3 against the Bengals.

Additionally, in September 2021, the Jets donated $1 million towards relief efforts in the war-torn country. They donated $100,000 each to 10 different organizations involved in providing relief efforts in Ukraine.

Nevertheless, the Jets surprised everyone by not drafting an offensive lineman to protect their new franchise QB Aaron Rodgers, who allegedly had issues with the current Jets’ O-line. Instead, the Jets selected the Iowa State defensive end Will McDonald IV. Well, GM Joe Douglas has proved to be good at identifying talents so maybe he knows something that others don’t.
