The Los Angeles Rams were Super Bowl LVI champions as they beat the Cincinnati Bengals at SoFi Stadium last year. To become the World Champions, the Rams had to mortgage their future. To acquire Matthew Stafford, the Rams gave up their 2021 third-round pick and two first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 along with Jared Goff.

The Rams took a huge bet on Stafford who had a 0-3 record in the postseason and expected to win the Super Bowl with him under center. However, their bet paid off as the former first-overall pick along with Cooper Kupp had one of the best seasons ever and rallied the team to lift the Lombardi Trophy.

The Super Bowl win cost the Los Angeles-based franchise a lot in the end. The team is in the middle of a complete rebuild as they are $14.1 million over the salary cap for 2023. A lot of players are being cut from the team because they can’t afford to keep them on the roster. The Rams parted ways with star linebacker Bobby Wagner on a mutual basis and are expected to release Jalen Ramsey as well.

A month after helping the Rams win the Super Bowl, Matthew Stafford signed a four-year, $160 million extension. However, Stafford could not play for the entirety of the 2022 season as he suffered a spinal cord contusion during Week 13. He also had surgery done on his elbow during the offseason which might’ve caused his performance to decline in the previous season.

In the nine games Matthew Stafford started, he threw for 2,087 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions along with a 3-6 record. Given his poor performance and injury, NFL reporter Michael Lombardi said on The Pat McAfee Show that the Rams are considering parting ways with the 35-year-old quarterback. “Matt Stafford is fully available. They would love to trade [him]. They can’t [easily] do it because he’s got $57 million guaranteed. [But] they’re trying to get out from it. [They’ve] called teams, I know this.”

This news brought a smile to the faces of Lamar Jackson’s fans who tried to recruit him to Los Angeles. People started commenting on social media that the Rams should acquire Jackson and keep him with them for close to a decade because he can win them another Super Bowl.

Despite all the rumors about Matthew Stafford being traded, Rams GM Les Snead said that the quarterback is “one of our pillars” and will play a key role alongside Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp in the rebuild. Let’s see if what the fans are hoping for comes to pass or not.
