In the last few moments of the game, when all eyes were on a backup running back, who was asked to make a pivotal fourth-down play that could have landed his team a playoff spot, Tyler Goodson dropped the pass, and the game ended Houston Texans victory by 23-19. Though Goodson played for 45 NFL snaps, none of them could cover for the one he dropped in the fourth quarter. And he knows that more than anyone!

This week 18’s loss has eliminated the Indianapolis Colts from the postseason and sent the Texans into the playoffs for the first time since 2019. The 23-year-old running back felt devastated for failing at such a crucial opportunity in his young career in the gridiron.

Goodson said while talking to the media, sharing that his teammates weren’t upset with him as they told him to keep his head up:

I was just feeling like a failure. I know I’m not a failure, I’m going to just state that. Me just being me, I’m always hard on myself, and I know I could have made that play and that play should have been made.

Although it was later observed that quarterback Gardner Minshew‘s throw on fourth-and-1 from Houston’s 15-yard line was off-target, Goodson knew he could have caught it. He said:

I work too hard to drop the ball like that. It touched my hands. Next year, I won’t be in that position ever again.

Why was Tyler Goodson called for the fourth-and-1 play instead of Jonathan Taylor?

RB Tyler Goodson joined the Colts in the 2022 NFL draft, coming off Iowa. But he didn’t appear in the regular season until the Colts’ week 13 game against the Tennessee Titans. He joined the practice squad in September but wasn’t promoted until late December.

Prior to the week 18 matchup, Goodson had been playing in the practice week, as a player who would be called upon in crucial situations to run flat routes in the short yardage play by the head coach.

When after the loss, the Colts were questioned about their decision to call running back Goodson, despite having Jonathan Taylor as the running back, Goodson shared he had been working on that short-yardage pass all week with the team.

That’s why the head coach Shane Steichen called him in the fourth quarter, the Colts were ready to run that play. But still, Goodson didn’t execute it and that ended up in a poor loss.
