Flag football is the less aggressive cousin of the gridiron but equally loved. For the last few years, the game has seen exponential growth in popularity in various parts of the world. A recent report revealed that flag football could be added to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. And as one of the biggest fans of the game, star wide receiver Tyreek Hill wants other NFL players to sign up as well.
For the uninitiated, flag football is similar to tackle football. Two teams play the passing and receiving plays and try to score points. The clock stops when the defender pulls a cloth flag from the waist of an opponent.
Backed by the NFL and the International Federation of American Football, this could have a far-reaching impact. Miami Dolphins Tyreek Hill is one of the more vocal sports personalities to advocate for flag football. The Super Bowl winner recently wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Calling all @NFL guys, let’s bring one home.”
Tyreek Hill’s love for flag football
Tyreek Hill is no stranger to the sport. His involvement with flag football goes back a few years, as it became a feature in the NFL‘s Pro Bowl festivities. Hill showcased his cheetah-like reflexes, grabbing a touchdown via lateral on one end of the field. On the other hand, he stunned the audience by deflecting a goal-line pass from the opposition.
For some time, the NFL has been trying to push flag football’s appeal to the rest of the world. And judging by its rapid rise in fame, it looks to be working quite well. And now that it will be part of the 2028 Olympics, more and more NFL stars will more than likely sign up to play for the country.
“Through this process, a number of great [young] stars of the league have said ‘how great it would be to represent their country and play the flag,’” NFL Executive Vice President Peter O’Reilly said in a recent interview. Hill’s call for other football players to join may be fruitful for the sport.
The World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, marked flag football’s first appearance at a major event. The Mexico women’s team shocked everyone by clinching first place, beating the USA. Where the USA men’s team dominates the Italians to clinch the inaugural title.
