If UCLA Bruins was the final game for Caleb Williams in the USC Trojans jersey, then it wasn’t the sending-off he was hoping for. They not only lost the game 20-38 but also dropped their fifth defeat of the season (most under head coach Lincoln Riley).

USC opened the season in Week 0, so this was their final regular-season college football game. The Trojans are eligible to play in a bowl, but whether Williams will appear in it remains a question.

That’s for the future. On the other hand, the reigning Heisman winner is one of those shortlisted for the trophy once again. But judging by the players in and around him, it’s more than likely he will probably miss out on replicating Archie Manning’s (Ole Miss, 1974 and 1975) winning the coveted award back-to-back.

Williams started the season in hot form, going 6-0. But he lost five of the next six to end the season with a 7-5 haul. What’s most interesting is that he did not record a single victory over ranked opponents. The Trojans lost against bitter rivals Notre Dame (42-20), Utah State (34-32), Washington State (52-42), and Oregon (36-27).

Social media speculates whether Caleb Williams will call his time at USC after the loss against UCLA

While UCLA is not ranked, they are city rivals of USC. So the game was equally important, not only to finish the season on a high note but also for bragging rights. Even though Caleb Williams threw 31/42 passes for 384 yards, he only completed one touchdown and picked off once (4th of the season).

Saturday night’s loss meant Williams ended the 2023 regular season with three straight defeats. This has prompted social media to reignite the long-standing question: has the 22-year-old had enough of college football and is heading for the NFL?

Caleb Williams has the potential to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, he will have strong competition from the likes of Drake Maye (UNC), Jayden Daniels (LSU), Michael Penix Jr. (Washington State), Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State), Jordan Travis (Florida State), and Bo Nix (Oregon) if all of them choose to declare themselves eligible for the draft.

Then again, Williams may not even enter the 2024 draft. Earlier in the season, his father Carl Williams declared he would reject any franchise if he deemed it unfit for a good career for his son.

Currently, there’s a race between the New York Giants (2-8), Arizona Cardinals (2-8), and Chicago Bears (3-7). Who would tank hard? Arizona is probably off the table considering Kyler Murray finally made his return and won. The Giants are the favorites for the time being. QB Daniel Jones is out with an ankle injury and will more than likely not make a return before the draft.
