Jeff Bezos, Jay-Z, and Byron Allen are moguls in the running to possibly become the new owners of the Washington Commanders
Jeff Bezos and Jay-Z could be the new face of the Commanders franchise
It has been over a day since the owner of the scandal-riddled Washington Commanders, Daniel Snyder announced that he would be exploring options for a team sale. He hired Bank of America to explore the possibilities of this which indicates that the team may go up for sale very soon. However, it is not up for grabs, at least not yet but the team has already attracted prominent investors such as Jeff Bezos, Jay-Z, and media mogul Byron Allen.
The race to become the next possible owner of the Commanders appears to be more interesting than the team’s season this year. Washington Post reported that Jeff Bezos, the Founder of Amazon and one of the wealthiest men globally is looking to put his money into the team.
Jay-Z is another prominent name who is considering his options and looking to buy a stake in the team. However, People Magazine has reported that Jeff Bezos and Jay-Z could get into a partnership and present themselves as a united front in the running to purchase the Commanders.
Media entrepreneur Byron Allen is reportedly also preparing to throw his hat in the ring and place a bid to acquire the Washington COmmanders. This would mark his second attempt at becoming the owner of a team as he had unsuccessfully attempted to acquire the Denver Broncos earlier this year. Bloomberg reported that the media mogul was working with an investor group and the discussions are confidential at this stage.
Jeff Bezos and Jay-Z or Byron Allen, the Washington Commanders will be renewed under new ownership:
Daniel Snyder, the existing owner of the Commanders could play this one of two ways, he would either put the whole team up for sale and cave into the demands of his fellow owners and the public or he could just sell a small stake in the team. If he does decide to sell the team as a whole, the Commanders would be worth an estimated $5 billion at least.
That amount is high but for Jeff Bezos and Jay-Z, that may not be as much. Owning an NFL team is an extremely profitable enterprise. Considering the team does go up on sale, Bezos, Jay-Z, and Byron Allen would have to go through the NFL’s bidding process. If they manage to clear this, the next step would be approval from the owners of all the teams in the league. Considering the NFL is already in business with Amazon as the company’s streaming arm, Prime Video has exclusivity to cover Thursday Night Football this season, Bezos would not have an issue getting the approval from the Commissioner and other owners.
If Bezos is stepping into the ring, the likelihood of him being outbid is slim to none and other owners would not object. The acquisition of the Commanders by the Amazon founder would not be surprising as the company has a big presence in the region. He has acquired the Washington Post, is currently constructing the company’s second headquarters in Arlington, and if there is anyone who can attract the fans back into the stadiums, it is that man.
The team needs a new stadium and Bezos has the funding ready for it. Byron Allen, the media mogul is still considering if he should invest in the Commanders or not. His plans could change and nothing is set in stone. If he does succeed at acquiring the team, then he would be the only black majority owner of an NFL team, that would be great PR for the NFL which has for long been criticized for its lack of inclusivity.
For now, we have to just wait and watch as everything depends on Daniel Snyder’s decision.
