The streak had to end at some point. The Baltimore Ravens had not lost a preseason game since 2015. It came to an end on Monday as the Washington Commanders celebrated a hard-fought victory as if they had won the Super Bowl.

It was a hot day in Maryland, and the temperature spiked as the kickoff came ever closer. There have already been several memorable matchups in the last couple of weeks, but the Commanders vs. the Ravens was a special occasion.

On one hand, Washington was aiming to bounce back from a narrow defeat against the Browns, and on the other, Baltimore was not in the mood to lose. However, something had to give, as a draw would be equivalent to a loss for either side.

The Ravens were ahead by eight points on the first down of the fourth quarter as Commanders quarterback Sam Howell saw running back Jaret Patterson wide open in left field. After receiving the ball, the 23-year-old dodged two rushing Ravens defenders and brushed off another to create a touchdown.

However, the game looked to be heading for an unwanted stalemate until kicker Joey Slye scored a 49-yard field goal to win the match for the Commanders. FedEx Stadium erupted as the players celebrated their win by running the length of the field and fist-bumping with some of the fans.

The Washington Commanders were already a prime target of social media after their recent switch in ownership. They are under immense pressure to turn their recent loss of fortune into something for their fans to cheer about. Breaking the Baltimore Ravens‘ winning streak has given them a platform to build upon for the 2023 NFL season. However, their over-the-top celebration after the victory has drawn immense trolling from various corners.

While the commenters may ridicule the victory celebrations as ‘Commanders Super Bowl,’ the Washington team was playing to prove a point. Before the first kick was even taken, their offensive tackle Sam Cosmi had mocked the Ravens’ 24-game preseason winning streak. “I think it’s a stupid record!” Cosmi told the reporters prior to the match. “Who gives a sh** about preseason games? We’re going to beat it.”

Only less than 2 minutes remainder in the second half a fight broke out following a Commanders touchdown. Washington’s offensive lineman Nick Gates pummeled Ravens defensive back Ar’Darius Washington. As the match was near its completion and the tied slowly turned in their favor, Cosmi was seen breaking out the ‘griddy.’

He managed to keep his word at the end of the day with the sprinkle of the sweet taste for breaking a winning streak. They will next face the Cincinnati Bengals on August 27.
