Joe Burrow left the game against the Baltimore Ravens midway through the second quarter on Thursday night after sustaining an injury to his throwing arm. He did not return, and backup Jake Browning had to take over the quarterback duties.
The Ravens were leading by four points when Browning entered the framing and tried to steady the ship. It was his first offensive snap since he entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie. The 27-year-old finished the game with 8/14 for 68 yards and one touchdown.
It wasn’t enough to save the Cincinnati Bengals from losing their fifth game of the season and second game on the bounce. After the match concluded, Burrow, who was being looked at the M&T Stadium infirmary, came out to greet Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.
That’s nothing special, as it has more or less become customary. Not only that, it provides the opportunity for the media to immortalize the moments by capturing some spectacular shots. However, this was no ordinary exchange of ‘great game’; rather, the cameras were fixated on Joe Burrow.
A video shared on X shows Burrow as he approaches Jackson, and the camera zooms in out of focus to catch a glimpse of his injured throwing right hand. However, the 26-year-old only extended his left arm toward his counterpart.
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor later confirmed that the Pro Bowler did indeed sustain a wrist injury. He did not specify anything else.
Will Joe Burrow’s injury affect the Cincinnati Bengals playoff chances?
The Ravens’ defeat not only hampers their aim of playing in the playoffs this season but also dealt a massive blow to winning another AFC North title. On top of that, depending on the severity of Joe Burrow’s wrist injury, the next few games may get trickier.
Next, they will face the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kenny Pickett may not be a lights-out quarterback like Jackson, but he is efficient. Especially when it comes to sucking a win away from under the noses of their opponents.
Pickett has six fourth-quarter comebacks and seven game-winning drives. He has also completed 73% of his passes, averaging 10.1 yards per attempt with a 102.8 passer rating during the fourth quarter of games.
Not to mention their stingy defense led by All-Pro pass rusher T.J. Watt, which can’t be forgotten. Then there is the trio of Patrick Peterson, Keanu Neal, and Elandon Roberts, who are from the steel wall of Pittsburgh.
Being one of the divisional rivals, the tie makes it even more crucial for the Bengals. While the Ravens top the group, the Steelers are level with the Browns with a 6-3 record, only ahead of their Cleveland counterpart due to a better head-to-head record.
