The San Francisco 49ers’ one mistake cost them the Super Bowl LVIII as they handed over the trophy in their opponents’ hand– in the words of Travis Kelce. But when Fred Warner made the controversial Super Bowl OT decision, the three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback’s reaction couldn’t have been more perfect.

Whoever said, ‘Silence speaks louder than words’ was absolutely right. And Patrick Mahomes is the perfect example of that. NFL Film captured the coin toss moment at the Super Bowl, where the Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback gave the most epic “poker face” reaction to the Niners’ grave mistake of choosing to receive the ball first in the overtime, a move that turned the whole game upside down.

The narrator said in the NFL Film:

There aren’t many things that can happen on a football field that catches Patrick Mahomes by surprise, but this — this surprised him.

Despite winning the coin toss, that would have given the 49ers an upper hand over the Chiefs, they were held to a field goal and that’s it.

And as soon as the Chiefs took possession of the ball, they turned it into a game-winning touchdown drive as Mahomes tossed a three-yard pass straight to wide receiver Mecole Hardman, into the end zone– contributing to their 25-22 victory.

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce react differently to 49ers’ blunder at Super Bowl overtime coin toss

On one side, where the elite quarterback Mahomes kept his cool with a poker face when he realized his opponent’s scandalous mistake at the overtime coin toss, his close friend and star tight end picked a more blunt approach amidst the whole controversy.

Kelce said on the post-Super Bowl episode of his “New Heights” podcast:

You win the coin toss, that’s what you get. You get the opportunity to have the advantage and they handed it right over to us.
Travis Kelce said

When the Niners went for the coin toss, they were absolutely unaware of the revised overtime rule, that changed after the 2021 divisional round game between the Chiefs and Bills but the Chiefs weren’t.
