Football is a complicated sport that requires hours of background work along with planning strategies and devising counter-offensives. However, the trickiest part of the game is the pre-snap calls that can make or break a team’s attack. Tua Tagovailoa has been mastering that art silently since he became a Miami Dolphins player.
The 25-year-old has been one of the standout performers for the Saints in the NFL since his draft in 2020. However, since Josh McDaniels took charge as the new head coach last year, things have changed drastically. McDaniels has served as an understudy of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as his offensive coordinator for the better part of a decade. Naturally, when a Super Bowl-winning master gives instructions, it’s better to gobble them up for future use. But it can be tricky to incorporate a different system.
In Miami, McDaniels has implied a defense-heavy squad along with free-flowing receivers. But even before a play takes place, the signals that set everything in motion need to be relayed to the players. That’s the trickiest part. Remembering the exact words of the move and blurting them out in one go is harder than it looks on television.
On Wednesday, Tagovailoa tested the reporters with an alleged’ play call after the Dolphins finished their joint practice with the Houston Texans. “I can give you guys a play, and then if you guys want to repeat it after me as if you guys were in the huddle,” he said. “North Right Clamp South Fox H Top Pass 38 Top Gun B XP Sweat.” Then he looked around to see if anyone understood. Nope. Not a single soul raised their hands. However, one of the reporters joked, “That sounds like a false start to us.”

Social media has a meltdown with Tua Tagovailoa’s complicated play-calling methods

It’s a hard job to be a quarterback. Besides finding an open receiver for a touchdown, he has to memorize all the calls beforehand. Tua Tagovailoa’s recent demonstration has renewed the fans’ respect for the players. But there are a few who did not stop to poke fun at making the game so complicated.
The Miami Dolphins did not have the best outing in terms of pre-snap penalties last year. Incidentally, they led the NFL in that regard, committing 46 such penalties, as per NFLpenalties.com. Josh McDaniels recently admitted to the unwanted stats they hold. He also emphasized that they are trying their best to improve on that.
“We couldn’t have emphasized it more this offseason,” he said on August 9. “When we false start, it’s not something people are very comfortable about.” However, it seems he hasn’t shortened the playcalling.
