Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Williams was involved in an accident on a construction site in Tampa. The accident left Williams paralyzed as he was hospitalized in intensive care at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa. The accident occurred in the Hillsborough County, which also includes Tampa.

Williams’ agent, Hadley Engelhard, confirmed that Williams died on Tuesday at the age of 36. Tierney Lyle, the mother of Williams’ 8-year old daughter, said that the doctors took him of the ventilator on Thursday afternoon. Williams was reportedly doing some electrical work when a steel beam fell on his head, severely injuring him as he was rushed to the hospital. The Buccaneers released a statement sympathizing with the Williams family.

While working on a construction site, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Williams was involved in an accident that saw a steel beam fall on his head. He was hospitalized after the incident. His agent revealed that he was paralyzed after the accident that, unfortunately, led to his death on Thursday.

Former teammate of Williams, Gerald McCoy, mourned his death and warned people about a tough life post NFL. McCoy took to social media and paid tribute to his former teammate saying, “Dang man hurts my heart seeing the news of my former teammate and Buccaneers 2010 draft class brother Mike Williams. Always great energy, brought joy and laughter to the locker room and a heck of a player!! Prayers and blessings to his family!”

McCoy also added that post playing is often tough for players. “Post football ain’t no joke man. Y’all be thinking we’re superheroes and we be tryna tell y’all we are humans just like everybody else.” This is the fourth teammate that McCoy has lost under the age of 40.

McCoy and Williams were both drafted in the same year. In his six years in the NFL, Williams made 223 receptions, scoring 26 touchdowns with 3,089 receiving yards. McCoy played for the Bucs for eight seasons and retired in 2023 after not playing in the 2022 season.
