Chris Smith was selected in the fifth round by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2014 NFL draft. He played for them until 2017, when he was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a 2018 conditional draft pick.

Smith then became a journeyman, playing for the Browns, Panthers, Raiders, Ravens, and Texans. On March 9, 2023, he ultimately signed with the Seattle Sea Dragons after not getting any other opportunities in the NFL.

Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett mourned the loss of his former teammate and said, “Chris was one of the kindest players and people that I’ve ever met. He was willing to give you the shirt off his back for you. It’s hard knowing people like that can go anywhere.”

The first overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft and former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield also shared his condolences in a tweet that read: “To know him was to love him. “Heaven got a good one. We’ll never forget you and we’ll always miss you. RIP Chris.”

In his eight-year career in the NFL, Chris Smith recorded 80 tackles and 11 sacks. The official Twitter handle of the Cleveland Browns also shared a kind and thoughtful message to Smith’s family and friends in their trying time.

The XFL said in a statement, “Chris was a powerful presence in the locker room. Loved and admired by his teammates and the coaching staff. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family at this difficult time.”
