“Who in the hell is Mel Kiper Jr,” Re-living Indianapolis Colts’ GM Bill Tobin and TV presenter’s epic duel 28 years back

Mel Kiper Jr, a current NFL analyst will forever have a special relationship with the Indianapolis Colts for calling them out about 28-years back after he was unimpressed with their draft pick in 1994. Kiper was fairly new to the scene back then, and his analysis drew a blunt response from then Colts’ General manager, Bill Tobin which is remembered and fresh in the minds of the NFL fans till now.

The drama centred around what the Colts should do with its two first-round selections, and they decided not to rope in a quarterback during the 1994 NFL drafts despite letting go of Jeff George. Mel Kiper Jr was astounded by the franchise’s decision and called them out for not challenging for the Super Bowl due to such decisions being made.

The feud between Mel Kiper Jr and Bill Tobin completed its 28th anniversary this year

Mel Kiper Jr said during the time, “I think it’s a typical Colt move. I mean, here’s a team that needed a franchise quarterback. To pass up a Trent Dilfer when all you have is Jim Harbaugh. Give me a break. That’s why the Colts are picking second every year in the draft, not battling for the Super Bowl like other clubs in the National Football League.”

This sparked an angry reaction from the Indianapolis Colts general manager at the time, Bill Tobin and the feud had become a big hit among the fans of the NFL and has continued to do so over the years. Tobin went on to rant against Mel Kiper Jr, as he questioned his credibility to become an NFL analyst despite not having played the game or been in a position of power in the game.

“Who in the hell is Mel Kiper anyway?” Tobin asked. “Here’s a guy that criticizes everybody, whoever they take. He’s got the answers to who you should take and who you shouldn’t take. And my knowledge of him: he’s never ever put on a jockstrap, he’s never been a coach, he’s never been a scout, he’s been an administrator and all of a sudden he’s an expert.”
