“Why didn’t Deebo Samuel GET TRADED?!”: NFL insider Ian Rapoport answers one of the biggest questions after the NFL draft
Deebo Samuel
The 2022 NFL draft is finally over. After some last minute deals and interesting picks from the teams, we have come to a conclusion. However it’s natural that there will be some unanswered questions after the draft.
One of the big questions that remains is that why didn’t Deebo Samuel get traded away from the San Francisco 49ers. This was something that everyone was pretty sure of given that Deebo Samuel himself had said that he wanted out.
Ian Rapoport talks about the Deebo Samuel situation
NFL insider Ian Rapoport made an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show wherein he talked about why Deebo Samuel didn’t trade away from the San Francisco 49ers. He says the 49ers did receive offers from two major teams but didn’t find them fit enough for Deebo Samuel.
The first offer was from the New York Jets who offered the No. 10 overall pick and a fifth-rounder in exchange for the Samuel and the 49ers second-rounder. It is obvious that the 49ers didn’t accept this deal. The other offer was from the Detroit Lions.
The Lions offered the number one and three overall pick but still they didn’t bulge. “The Lions offer was, I think, a one and a three, and the 49ers didn’t view that as a good enough offer [either],” Rapoport said. “And they wanted to keep the player anyway, so they just didn’t trade him.”
“I’d say there was some other issues below the surface that Deebo feels some sort of way about,” Rapoport said. “We’ve seen it get fixed in the past. We’ve seen players who asked to be traded and then came back, so it’s not impossible. And [general manager John] Lynch and [head coach Kyle] Shanahan are very charismatic, so perhaps they can do it. But they’ve got to bring Deebo back into the fold. They’ve been willing to do a contract. That generally helps people feel better.”
