ESPN’s senior writer and analyst Mina Kimes is a regular on TV and sometimes goes viral for her interesting takes on the daily happening in the NFL. However, recently she has been all over the internet for the wrong reasons. She didn’t do anything wrong but was actually wronged and became the victim of an ethnic slur.

WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show hosted by Chris Curtis along with his co-host was discussing a proposal where miniature alcohol bottles are sold in the city of Boston during Tuesday’s episode. These miniature bottles are sometimes referred to as ‘nips.’ Curtis in what was a failed attempt tried to make a joke and named Mina Kimes as his favorite which did not land well. “I’d probably go Mina Kimes,” he said.

ESPN came to Kimes’ rescue and blasted the radio host for being insensitive and offensive. “There is no place for these type of hateful comments,” an ESPN spokesperson told The Hill. They also added that these remarks were totally uncalled for and “extremely offensive.”

Chirs Curtis came forward and released a statement in which he apologized to Mina Kimes and said that he will be taking an unpaid suspension until Wednesday. In his statement, he said, “In a pathetic failed attempt at a one-liner, I attempted to bring up Mila Kunis, which was not really that funny… sophomoric and sexist. But for reasons I don’t understand, I said Mina Kimes.

Nips or Nippon was an ethnic slur used against Japanese people during World War II. In the heat of the moment, Curtis didn’t even know that Mina Kimes is actually of Korean descent from her mother’s side and not Japanese which seems kind of racist as well. Mina Kimes has been a respected member of the NFL journalism world and Curtis coming in and calling her a racial slur was definitely not in good taste.

Mina Kimes responded to Curtis’ apology statement in which he mentioned having mixed up Kimes with American actress Mila Kunis. The 37-year-old analyst changed her Twitter profile picture to that of Kunis which had people laughing. Fans also came to her defense and thrashed Chris Curtis for his unnecessary comments.

ESPN has done a great job of standing up for Mina Kimes. Honestly, it’s the 21st century, and people should really start respecting each other rather than throw some age-old racial or ethnic slurs at others.
