Miami Dolphins supporters wish their club had defeated the Buffalo Bills so that a wild card game in frigid Missouri might have been avoided. Unfortunately, they have no choice but to travel to Arrowhead and possibly sit through the coldest game in NFL history against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Bills’ defeat took away the chance to set up a home tie at Hard Rock. Instead, their next opponents are the current Super Bowl winners. According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in Kansas City could drop to as low as -30 degrees windchill.
Judging by the recent abundance of snow in the area, this may well be the coldest game ever played in the league. It will topple the previous best by some distance. One has to turn back time to 1967, the infamous ‘ice bowl‘ at Lambeau Field when the Green Bay Packers squared off against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship game.
The coldest games in Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins history
As for the Dolphins team, which hails from the sunny south, the coldest game they have ever played was in Kansas. Back in 2008, the temperature was 10 degrees during kick-off. Incidentally, they won the game 38-31.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, are no strangers to battle in the snow. Their coldest game was back in 1983 when the Chiefs played a game against the Denver Broncos where the temperature was 0.5 degrees at kickoff.
Not only that, recent history is on Patrick Mahomes‘ side. They won nine times in the past 10 home games where the temperature dropped below 40 degrees (Fahrenheit).
According to FOX 4 Kansas City, the coldest playoff game in Chiefs history was a 1996 Divisional Round clash with the Indianapolis Colts. It was 11 degrees at the start of the match, with a windchill of negative 15. On that occasion, Jim Harbaugh led the Colts to a 10-7 win.
Odds for the game
Losing the Bills meant the Dolphins lost four of their last five games. Not only that, but it cost them a favorable seed going into the playoffs. They had the chance to finish second behind the Baltimore Ravens, but eventually, they finished the regular season as the 6th seed.
The Chiefs have had a difficult season. They led the league with 44 dropped balls, which affected their win percentage, eventually finishing with an 11-6 record (same as Miami). This was the most Mahomes had lost in a season since he entered the NFL.
However, considering everything, including the snowy weather forecast, the Chiefs are slight favorites to beat the Dolphins, as per SpotsLine Sportsbook.
- Dolphins vs. Chiefs spread: Kansas City -4.5
- Dolphins vs. Chiefs over/under: 44 points
- Dolphins vs. Chiefs money line: Kansas City -226, Miami +184
The kickoff is at 8 p.m. ET in Kansas City. It will be difficult for the players to cope with the weather. But the spectators are the ones who will feel the full brunt of the weather. So it’s better to pack a bundle of warm clothes if anyone plans to visit GEHA Field on Saturday.
