Xavier Worthy arrived at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis to prove that he was the fastest wide receiver out of all the participants. The Texas Longhorns playmaker lit up the college football scene in 2023, racking up 75 catches for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns.
On Friday, March 1, he faced the media and declared that he would only be taking part in the broad jump, the vertical jump, and the 40-yard dash. But his primary focus was to set the best time in the 40-yard. Worthy confidently said,
I wanna run 4.2.
A day later, the young playmaker kept his word. All eyes were on him as he lined up to run the 40-yard dash. When he crossed the finish line, the clock timed him at 4.21 seconds, breaking the previous record set by John Ross in 2017.
Football players and fans react to Xavier Worthy’s record-breaking 40-yard dash
This isn’t anything new for the Texas speedster. While playing for the Longhorns, Worthy reached a top speed of 22.7 mph during a punt return in Week 12 last year. Although the return was chalked off by the officials due to a penalty, it caught several scouts eyes.
Saturday’s display at Lucas Oil Stadium reminded me that Worthy is one of the players that any franchise looking to add a zing to their forward line should target. The reactions from NFL pros following his jaw-dropping 40-yard dash say it all.
An impressive time like 4.21 should entice the NFL teams to take a chance on Xavier Worthy in the first round. He already has a destination in mind. During the press interview on Friday, he expressed being a good fit for the San Francisco 49ers.
I feel like all of them [the San Francisco 49ers receivers] play with an attitude, like they have something to prove, and I kind of fit in that too. I feel like me playing how I play, me bringing the speed element, I feel like it would fit right.Worthy said
Bleacher Report‘s scouting department currently has Worthy ranked as the No. 10 wide receiver to get selected in the draft. This means he will be the 57th or 58th overall pick.
