On Saturday night, the New York Jets took on the defending NFC South Champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their preseason matchup. The Jets suffered their second loss in the preseason as they ended up losing the game 13-6 against the Bucs. But their 2nd-string QB Zach Wilson had a solid outing. After the game, Wilson talked about taking the team over once Aaron Rodgers retires from the game.

Before the Jets game against the Buccaneers, Rodgers talked about leading the New York-based football team for the next couple of years and then handing the keys to Zach Wilson. “I’d like to be able to play a few good years here, and then hand it right back off to Zack, and let him go for the next 15, and then it’d be a really special 18-20 year run of great quarterback play,” said Wilson in an interview with CBS News.

Following the game, the former second-overall pick Wilson was asked about Aaron Rodgers’ comments by the reports. “That’s the goal,” Wilson answered with a big smile.“It helps me knowing that he believes in me that I can play in this game for a long time. That’s why I lean on him so much… Truly appreciative to have a big brother like that,” added Wilson.

The 24-year-old still has 2 years remaining on his rookie deal. If Rodgers played for a couple of years before retiring, the Jets could pick his 5th-year option and give a second chance to Wilson to prove his talents in the league.

The Jets’ former first-round pick Zach Wilson has been impressive in the preseason so far. Wilson, who is expected to play the second-fiddle to Aaron Rodgers for the next couple of seasons has shown so much improvement in his game.

Even on the Jets’ loss against the Buccaneers on Saturday night, Wilson had a big 35-yard scramble that impressed everyone including the 39-year-old veteran leader Rodgers.

Wilson was a highly-touted quarterback out of BYU. He was selected by the New York-based football team as the second-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft ahead of QBs like Justin Fields and Mac Jones.

However, Wilson’s talent didn’t translate to the next as he struggled a lot in New York which led to the franchise shopping for a QB in the 2023 off-season. They ended up adding Rodgers to their roster, who has been grooming Wilson to take over the team once he retires from the sport.
