“Of course, he was disrespected” – Nick Wright backs Baker Mayfield, blames Cleveland for jeopardizing his future in the NFL

Baker Mayfield and Nick Wright

Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns had a disastrous season that led the management to think long and hard about some leadership changes. Mayfield seemed to have lost all his momentum as his performance started to decline after every game rather than going the other way around.

This prompted the Browns to look elsewhere to find the perfect fight for their team and they did find it in Deshaun Watson. There were a lot of terrible outcomes to come from this deal but not securing a trade for Baker Mayfield was the biggest one. This has left the former No.1 draft pick with no destination as of yet for the 2022 season.

Recently, Mayfield talked in detail about his experience with the Browns on the YNK Podcast. He said that although he doesn’t regret his stay at Cleveland, he does feel disrespected. Nick Wright on First Things First undoubtedly agreed with Baker Mayfield and blamed the Browns for handling the whole Watson-Mayfield saga in a poor fashion.

“This entire process has been handled amateurishly and of course, Baker had a right to feel like he had earned more respect, more dignity, more professionalism from a franchise that before he became a QB was the worst franchise in all of professional sports in the country for give or take 30 years,” Wright said.

Before Baker Mayfield stepped in as the Browns’ QB, the team hadn’t won a single game in their last 19 games. The team had become a laughing stock for everyone around the world. Then came in the Heisman Trophy winning QB from Okhlama who ended their 635-day streak, and went on to set the rookie quarterback record for passing touchdowns. He did struggle during his second year but soon found his footing as he led the Browns to their first playoff appearance in 2002 and victory since 1994 in 2020.

“The Browns had quality players before Baker & they were miserable because they couldn’t get the QB right. They got the QB right-ish & the moment they thought they could get it right-er, they throw Baker to the wolves in an awful manner. Of course, he was disrespected,” Wright added.

Mayfield is right to feel disrespected after the way the Browns handled a very complicated situation. It’ll be interesting to see where Mayfield ends up for the 2022 season.
