“There was a bit of shock” Patrick Mahomes reveals how he felt when he heard that Tyreek Hill had been traded
Tyreek Hill and Patrick Mahomes
The devastating duo of Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill terrorized NFL defenses for the past 4 years. As a result, the Kansas City Chiefs made 4 straight AFC Championships and 2 consecutive Super Bowls, winning 1 of them.
In the 4 seasons since Patrick Mahomes became the starter, he played 58 games with Tyreek Hill and completed 331 passes to him for 4638 yards and 42 touchdowns. That yards mark truly is unbelievable and is what defined the Mahomes-Hill connection as no duo was more lethal deep down the field.
Those breathtaking deep balls won’t be going to Tyreek Hill anymore as the Chiefs sent their superstar to the Miami Dolphins in a blockbuster trade that saw them get a 1st, 2nd, and 4th round pick for 2022 as well as a 4th and 6th rounder for 2023 in return. It seems that Hill wanted to be the highest-paid receiver and the Chiefs couldn’t offer him enough so, they opted to trade him now rather than lose him to free agency.
Patrick Mahomes is surely going to miss his #1 receiver and he shared his thoughts on the trade recently.
Patrick Mahomes was aware that Tyreek Hill could be traded but still surprised
‘Sports Illustrated’s’ Albert Breer spoke to Patrick Mahomes about the trade and how he felt “It more surprised me whenever it got to the point where we were really considering trading him. They kept me updated the entire time; I knew the extension talks were going on. And then I knew when he got the permission to seek to get traded. But I mean, still, I played my entire career with Tyreek, so definitely, there was a little bit of shock when he got traded.”
Mahomes also added “At the same time, they kept me involved the entire process, and I know that we made a tremendous effort to try to keep him in Kansas City. Tyreek, he’s such a tremendous player, he got what he deserved. I’m happy for him. And he’s at a place where he has a home and he’s closer to family and stuff. So I’m very happy for him. We had to move forward.”
It’s not too surprising to hear that Mahomes was kept updated about Hill’s situation, after all, he was his best receiver but, Mahomes also revealed that the Chiefs have been keeping him in the loop since he became the starter back in 2018.
Mahomes was quoted saying “I’ve been involved pretty much my entire career (as a starter). I mean, I remember when we signed Sammy Watkins. I’m not saying who we need to sign and who we don’t need to sign and all this different type of stuff. But they let me know what they’re thinking and why they’re thinking it, and I think that’s why the relationship that we have in Kansas City is so great with Coach Reid and Veach and everybody, it’s they keep everybody informed of where we’re going and what the vision is of the future.”
It’s not like the Chiefs have nothing going for them since the trade as they still have All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce along with offseason additions in Juju Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Mahomes also commented on that and expressed his excitement for the 2022 season.
He added “I actually have a lot of guys coming in the end of this week and we’re going to continue the rest of the offseason and OTAs. We will be together and working. We have a whole new receiving room, so I’m gonna get these guys together as much as possible just to build those relationships, as much as me getting to work with them. So I think by the time we get to the season, we’ll have a tight-knit group with a lot of great playmakers.”
If the Chiefs are going to make it back to a 5th consecutive AFC Championship in 2022, they’re going to have a lot of work to do and it starts now with figuring out how their passion game can remain lethal. But, shifting to a more balanced offense will also be crucial. Only time will tell how Patrick Mahomes adjusts to this new offense.
