“I just focus on the football part” – Raiders TE Darren Waller isn’t sweating about his contract

This offseason has seen many players upgrade their contracts guaranteeing them more money. Recently, Super Bowl LVI champ, Aaron Donald received a raise of $40 million making him the only non-QB player to have a $30 million per year contract.
Raiders TE Darren Waller has outplayed his current contract but according to Waller, he isn’t concerned about his future. Any other player in Waller’s shoes would’ve first secured a contract with the team. However, the Raiders TE is focused on improving his gameplay.
Darren Waller says worrying about contract is his agent’s job, he is focused on playing football

Darren Waller was selected in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens. During his stint with the Ravens, Waller hardly got any game time owing to his injury and substance abuse issues. In 2018, the Raiders signed Waller off Baltimore’s practice squad. Waller’s luck changed after signing with the Raiders as he got clean and focused on his game and soon became of the centerpieces of the team’s offense.
Darren Waller currently has two years left on his contract with a base salary of $6.25b million per year without any guaranteed money left. “I just focus on enjoying it while I’m here whether I’m here 10 years or who knows how long; I’m just being present here,” Waller said Tuesday, via The Athletic regarding his contract. “My agent’s job is to do that stuff and I just focus on the football part.”

The Las Vegas Raiders will be holding their mandatory minicamps this week and Waller is expected to participate in them and learn under the new leadership of Josh McDaniels. Waller is eager to play under McDaniels who was the former offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. He is expecting to be used in the same way Rob Gronkowski was back in New England.
“I’m excited. It’s asking me to do a lot of things,” Waller said. “We watch a lot of tape of Rob Gronkowski running wild from old New England clips. So it’s exciting to see different ways that I’ll be used. Up some seams, over routes, catching short passes and just blowing through people, catching fade balls on the outside. Lining up everywhere doing everything really. It’s a challenging system, but I love a good challenge. I think it will bring the best out of us.”
