“It wouldn’t work with Tom Brady” Shannon Sharpe claims the 49ers did the right thing by passing on the GOAT
Tom Brady and Shannon Sharpe
Tom Brady made waves in the NFL world when he decided he wasn’t going to return to the New England Patriots after the 2019 season. At that time, many wondered if he would join his boyhood team, the San Francisco 49ers.
While he ultimately elected to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 49ers could’ve had a real shot at Brady if they wanted. Ultimately, they decided not to which at the time, made sense. Jimmy Garoppolo had just got them to the Super Bowl and had he completed one more pass to Emmanuel Sanders, they might have a championship too.
Since then, the 49ers have shown little faith in Garoppolo. So much so that with Tom Brady announcing that he’s coming back to the NFL, many speculated if the 49ers would make a move for him this time around.
Shannon Sharpe took this into account and gave his take on why San Francisco electing to not chase Tom Brady twice is the right move for the franchise.
Shannon Sharpe explains why Tom Brady wouldn’t fit in San Francisco
In a segment of Fox Sports’ ‘Undisputed’, Shannon Sharpe was quoted saying “The first time, Jimmy G had taken them to the Super Bowl. They didn’t anticipate him getting hurt in the second year but that’s kinda been his story, either he’s hurt or he makes one dumb decision that costs you the game. But, at the end of the day, I just don’t think Tom is a great fit for Kyle Shanahan’s offense.”
To explain that last comment, Sharpe added “They have weapons, great receivers, the way Kyle can dial up the running game, it’s second to none. But, it is just not a great fit. There’s gonna be a power struggle and we’ve seen how it was with Bruce Arians early on. It wouldn’t work.”
Sharpe also added “Also, they gave up so much to get Trey Lance. And, to stagnate his growth, even more, I just think, no. So, I believe they made the right decision.”
Whether or not Tom Brady actually wanted to force his way to San Francisco is probably something we will only find out once he permanently retires. For now, he remains in Tampa Bay for year #3 and continues his quest for his 8th ring in 2022.
