“They believed Baker Mayfield couldn’t get them to their ultimate destination” Shannon Sharpe claims the Browns were going to replace their quarterback no matter what in 2022

Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns are all but guaranteed to part ways at some time in 2022. With Cleveland completing the blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson, they’ve essentially told Mayfield that he isn’t wanted anymore without actually saying that.

Before the trade was completed, it was very open news that the Browns wanted to bring in Watson. That didn’t sit well with Baker Mayfield and that certainly is understandable. As such, he requested a trade before Watson was even acquired. At that time, the Browns declined the request but now that Watson is there, Mayfield will surely be shipped out.

So, while Mayfield is likely to be traded, a destination for him is much more difficult to find as most QB needy teams have gone to the trade block already or gone after someone in free agency. The remaining are likely to look towards the upcoming draft.

What really doesn’t help is the fact that Mayfield had a poor 2021 season. He played most of the year injured and while that’s great to look tough, it didn’t help out his numbers. Mayfield finished the season having played 14 games and thrown for 3010 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. It was statistically Mayfield’s worst season of his short career and may now hamper his chances to start in 2022.

Recently Shannon Sharpe shared his thoughts about the situation surrounding the trade request and how things would’ve played out even if Deshaun Watson wasn’t traded to Clevland.

Shannon Sharpe believes Baker Mayfield played too poorly to remain in Cleveland

In a segment of Fox Sports’ ‘Undisputed’, Shannon Sharpe was quoted saying “Letter or not, the Cleveland Browns were looking to move on from Baker Mayfield. He was trying to win the PR battle but the Cleveland Browns had already made up their mind. They were going in a different direction and if they didn’t get Deshaun Watson, they were going to keep surveying the landscape to try to find a quarterback. They were looking for a quarterback.”

Sharpe further added “This wasn’t about overplaying your hand. This was about underperforming on the football field. If Baker Mayfield throws for 40 touchdowns are they looking to get Deshaun Watson? Absolutely not! They believe that Baker Mayfield can’t get them to their ultimate destination.”

Sharpe concluded by saying “This was not about overplaying his hand. Had he played like Joe Burrow or Patrick Mahomes, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Because he didn’t, he invited the Browns to start searching for another quarterback.”

With Baker Mayfield now essentially guaranteed to be gone, we’ll just have to wait and see where he ends up. The draft could be very telling in terms of which teams still would want a quarterback coming out of it.
