Should Aaron Rodgers be paid $50 million by the Packers

Should Aaron Rodgers be paid $50 million by the Packers

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers have been in a complicated relationship since their NFC championship loss in the 2020 season. Following that, Rodgers wanted out of Green Bay due to the lack of Super Bowl appearances.

Following the trade demands, Rodgers and the Packers agreed to remain together for 2021 to give it one more shot at the Super Bowl. While they nailed the regular season, the playoffs remained a disappointment as their season ended after the first playoff game. A heartbreaking loss to the 49ers at Lambeau Field brought up all the talk of Rodgers leaving again.

As of now, Rodgers hasn’t stated that he wants out of Green Bay. He also hasn’t said that he wants to stay but a decision should be coming soon. Of course, the Packers do have him under contract through 2022 so if they decide that they don’t want to trade him, he won’t be going anywhere regardless of what he wants.

With all this news, a report by ESPN’s Dianna Russi claimed that Aaron Rodgers wants to be paid $50 million by the Packers and once again be the highest-paid player in the NFL. Since then, Rodgers has come out and denied those claims but it’s still possible that it happens. With that in mind, should it happen?

Well to come to a conclusion on that, we’ll take a look at it from both party’s points of view.

Why Aaron Rodgers would want $50 million

Besides the obvious fact that everyone wants to be paid as much as they can, there are some valid reasons for why Aaron Rodgers would want to be paid that much. The biggest factor is the fact that he’s coming off 2 straight NFL MVPs. Now he has a total of 4 which puts him only behind Peyton Manning(5) for most ever in the NFL.

The MVP technically means most valuable player but in the NFL it goes to the best player in the league. Rodgers has now been awarded that title 2 years in a row and normally, the best players in the league want to be the highest paid. So, Rodgers wanting that isn’t absurd from that point of view.

Another reason why he could be paid that much is him wanting to stay in Green Bay as opposed to moving on to contend with a different team. It could be seen as greedy but that could be why he chooses to remain in Green Bay this offseason. If he isn’t going to get another ring, at the very least, he’s getting paid.

The Packers have made it very clear that they want Aaron Rodgers to remain in Green Bay. Their ideal scenario is that he retires as a Packer and helps bring them at least one more Super Bowl. That makes it seem like they would be happy to give him what he wants. However, there’s one problem with paying your quarterback $50 million.

The Packers are in cap hell right now with current estimates being $37 million over the cap. They have made some significant moves like the restructuring of David Bakhtiari, Aaron Jones and Kenny Clark’s contracts. They still have a lot of work to do if they wish to keep Rodgers and Davante Adams for the long run.

If Aaron Rodgers gets paid such a high sum, not only does that not help their cap problem, he takes up such a huge chunk of the cap, the Packers may struggle to keep Davante Adams as well as bring in new players to compete for a Super Bowl. It’s all well and good to want to keep your future Hall of Famer around, but at the cost of remaining competitive? It’s a very tough decision to make.

For the Packers’ sake, unless they can work a cap miracle, the answer is no. Aaron Rodgers taking a $50 million deal to remain in Green Bay presumably till he retires will more than likely just hurt the Packers. They need to be as competitive a team as possible. Yes, having Rodgers as your quarterback means they’ll always remain a threat but they need other pieces in the fold otherwise they won’t be able to win that next Super Bowl.
