This offseason has been one of the wildest ones in NFL history and more so for the wide receivers. This offseason saw WRs receiving quarterback-like money. The Green Bay Packers traded their star receiver Davanate Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs also had to lose Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

Both the trades had to do with money and other star receivers are looking to follow in Adams’ and Hill’s footsteps. Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that 49ers’ star Deebo Samuel, Titans’ receiver A.J.Brown and Commanders’ wideout Terry McLaurin are seeking new contracts and will not participate in any on-field work during their respective teams’ offseason programs.

Deebo Samuel and A.J. Brown were second-round picks in the 2019 draft, and Terry McLaurin was a third-round selection that year. All three players have entered the final year of their rookie contracts. These rising stars are looking for new deals at a time when wide receivers are getting record deals.

The Raiders signed Davante Adams to a five-year contract worth $142.5 million, includes $67.5 million in guarantees, and will pay Adams an annual average of $28.5 million. Shortly after this record-breaking deal, the Dolphins acquired Tyreek Hill from Kansas City. Hill signed a four-year $120 million deal that includes $30 million annually, receiving $72.2 million guaranteed and also $52.535 million at signing.

Samuel, 26, is coming off a career-best season with 1,405 receiving yards, caught six touchdown passes, and rushed for eight touchdowns — an NFL single-season record for a receiver. Brown, 24, had to battle several injuries last season but still managed to get 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two years with the Titans. He had 63 catches for 869 yards and five TDs in 13 games in 2021. McLaurin, 26, enjoyed another productive season in 2021 despite Washington’s lack of quality at quarterback. He had 1,053 yards — his second straight 1,000-yard season — and five TDs on 77 receptions.

The NFL’s offseason programs are voluntary, and players who don’t attend are not subject to any fines or penalties. It isn’t bold of these receivers to ask for a higher paycheck given the stellar performances they have had so far. Let’s see how things roll out for these young talents in the 2022 season.
