“T. J. Watt is the MVP”: Watt should be considered for MVP after tying Giants legend Michael Strahan for NFL’s single-season sack record
T. J. Watt and Michael Strahan
Pittsburgh Steelers Edge Rusher, T.J.Watt tied New York Giants legend, Michael Strahan, for the NFL’s single-season sack record in the season finale game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Watt tied Michael Strahan’s NFL single-season sack record of 22.5 sacks with 23 seconds left in the first half. Watt nearly had at least one more, which would have given him sole possession of the record but sadly the sack was ruled not a sack.
“The record is not just mine”: T. J. Watt thanked his coaches and teammates after matching the single-season sack record
T.J. Watt achieved this remarkable feat by coming around the edge, beating Ravens tight end Eric Tomlinson and left tackle David Sharpe and bringing down quarterback Tyler Huntley for a loss of 3 near the goal line. Giants pass rusher Michael Strahan was the sole owner of his NFL sack record for 20 years before Watt matched his level of dominance.
“I don’t know if any of this has hit me,” Watt said of tying the record. “It’s not just myself. It’s so many other people involved, great players, coaches, schemes, and a lot of unselfish guys in the locker room that allow me to make plays. So that record is not just mine.”
Can T. J. Watt be MVP?
The New York Giants legend and Hall of Famer established a new sack record in a 2001 Week 17 game against the Green Bay Packers when quarterback Brett Favre rolled into Strahan’s pass-rushing path and slid down at his feet. Strahan passed the New York Jets’ Mark Gastineau’s mark of 22 sacks set in 1984.
T.J.Watt achieved his 22.5 sacks in just 15 games since he missed two games in Week 3 and Week 11. Some might argue that Watt’s hold over the NFL single sack record might be stronger because Strahan did not miss any games in 2001 playing all 16 games. With this record-setting season, T.J.Watt has cemented his position as the front runner for NFL Defensive Player of the Year recipient. But many suggest that he can easily be the league MVP after his dominant season.
