“Mayfield to play for the Bucs?”: Tampa Bay GM Jason Licht hints at Baker Mayfield’s inclusion in the team as Tom Brady’s backup
Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield
The Cleveland Browns had a disastrous 2021 season and one man who particularly had terrible outings one after the other was Baker Mayfield. Baker was expected to guide his side to wins, however, throughout the season he failed to find his rhythm and was caught off-guard by even mediocre defenses.
As a result, he was trolled mercilessly and speculations started arising that the Browns might want to release him. Recently, the Browns signed Deshaun Watson and are all set to trade Mayfield in the near future.
“We will add a veteran QB to the team”: Jason Licht on Baker Mayfield
It might not be exactly clear where Baker will go, however, many are suggesting that he might end up with the mighty Bucs. Commenting on the same, Tampa Bay’s general manager Jason Licht had a few things to say on SiriusXM’s “Mad Dog Sports Radio”.
“I don’t want to talk about a player that’s on another team’s roster right now, but we may still add a veteran quarterback,” Licht said suggesting that the rumors might actually turn out to be true. “We’re going to have to see how it goes here,” Licht further added.
As a matter of fact, Blaine Gabbert had been utilized as Brady’s backup for two seasons, and they also have got second-year QB Kyle Trask as another option. It is possible that Brady might retire again after the end of the 2022 season, so in order to ensure that the team doesn’t suddenly fall off a cliff, they might actually get Mayfield to just get him accustomed to the team culture.
Licht also talked highly about Kyle Trask during the show. “Kyle is somebody that we’ve been really excited about, and his progression last year, as a backup quarterback, just learning behind Tom, learning behind Blaine. We’re really excited about him and I think he’s just going to continue to develop,” he added.
It will be interesting to see if the Bucs finally decide to go after Mayfield.
