“Not one but four teams wanted Deshaun”: Texans G.M Nick Caserio explains why Deshaun Watson got such a humungous contract

The Browns were bound to make some changes after a disastrous 2021 season. One man who looked most likely to face the ax was Baker Mayfield. As a result, the Browns Browns decided to meet Deshaun Watson a few days back. However, it was then reported that Deshaun refused to join the Browns and that Mayfield was requesting a trade.

However, Deshaun Watson had a change of heart and is finally ready to join the Browns. Watson himself confirmed the news on Instagram, writing “Cleveland, LETSSSS GOOOO!! DawgPound Ready To Work!“ According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, Deshaun is set to receive a whopping $230 million through the next five years.

Important contract note for Deshaun Watson, who got a 5-year, $230M contract. His base salary for 2022 is $1M, which means if he’s suspended, it’ll come out of that base,” Rapoport had informed. Indeed, this is a huge deal. In fact, with this deal, Deshaun has surpassed the likes of Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers to become the footballer with the most guaranteed money on a single contract in NFL history.

Deshaun will get $230 million guaranteed money while Aaron Rodgers, who recently confirmed a deal with the Packers is set to get $150.7 million. As it turns out, one of the biggest reasons behind the monumental contract is that no two but four teams were desperate to rope in Deshaun ahead of the 2022 season.

Apparently, Panthers, Saints, Falcons, and Browns were interested in adding Watson to their respective sides. Talking about the same, Texans G.M. Nick Caserio told reporters on Saturday, “I would say there was a fair amount of teams, but what we tried to do was bring the teams that had a legitimate interest, and that was based off the compensation that was presented,” he said.

I think there was a certain threshold that I had established in order to make it a legitimate discussion, and if we got to that point then we could engage further. I don’t want to get into the exact number, but there were a few more, however many teams than what everybody was reporting towards the end,” he further added as reported by NBC Sports.

It will be interesting to see how Deshaun performs, especially when a lot of people have shown their anger towards the NFL and the Browns for offering him so much money despite the sexual harassment allegations.
