“The Cowboys made a mistake with Amari Cooper” Colin Cowherd believes Dak Prescott will be hurt by losing his best receiver

When the Dallas Cowboys traded a first-round pick for Amari Cooper in 2018, they thought they were getting a game breaker for Dak Prescott to take the offense to the next level. Now, in 2022, he won’t even be on the roster.

In his 3 full seasons with the Cowboys, Amari Cooper was always an exceptional receiver that showed off his precise route running more than just about any other player in the league. However, a slight dip was seen in 2021. In the previous 2 years, Cooper topped 1000 receiving yards and was the team’s leader in targets. In 2021, he failed to cross 1000 yards and Dak Prescott’s top target was CeeDee Lamb.

Part of that has to do with Cooper’s previous success because defenses definitely focused in on him in 2021. Taking the focus away from a receiver of CeeDee Lamb’s quality means he will definitely punish you and that’s exactly what happened. More often than not Prescott found success targeting Lamb and tight end Dalton Schultz so, he just targeted them.

It seems as though the Cowboys felt that the production they were getting from their other receivers would make up for not having Amari Cooper and so they traded him to the Browns. Colin Cowherd believes this was a mistake.

Colin Cowherd calls out the Cowboys for trading Amari Cooper

In a segment of his show, ‘The Herd’, Colin Cowherd was quoted saying “The Dallas Cowboys essentially fired Amari Cooper. They were like we’re gonna get rid of him. If you ever get fired and 5 different companies are immediately looking to hire you, just know, you weren’t the problem. They didn’t get you. 5 teams were interested in Amari cooper. If you put Ezekiel Elliot in the market with that contract, you wouldn’t get a call.”

Cowherd further added “Don’t tell me Amari Cooper isn’t valuable. Dak ain’t the same dude. Dak’s passer rating plummets without Amari. His completion percentage plummets. Points per game, almost 9 points a game less. I’m here to defend Amari Cooper. I don’t think it’s a good move. I think the Dallas Cowboys fired the wrong guy. I think Dallas made a mistake with Amari Cooper.”

It won’t take long for the Cowboys to find out if they really made a mistake by trading away Amari Cooper. No one wants to be paying a massive contract for a receiver that is essentially a decoy on the field but, if the other receivers can’t produce in 2022, the Cowboys might feel like that contract wasn’t so bad at all.
