The Titans propose new OT rules where teams have to score a touchdown along with a ‘key twist’ to win

The new OT rules gives both the teams fair shot at ball possession

The NFL is once again set to consider changing its overtime rules. The Tennessee Titans have proposed a new rule that hasn’t been tried before.

The change for OT rules gained momentum after the Buffalo Bills lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime in the divisional round of the playoffs. The only reason Bills lost the games was because they lost the coin toss and in turn the possession of the ball.

New OT rules proposed by the Titans require teams to convert a 2-point to win along with scoring a touchdown

The Titans have proposed a new OT rule wherein the team with the first possession has to score a touchdown and successfully convert a 2-point try to win in overtime. This change will allow both teams to have a chance to win in OT. This new rule deviates from the current one where the team that scores a touchdown in the first possession wins the game.

This proposal put forth by the Titans will make it difficult for teams to win on first possession but not impossible. Some believe that there’s no need to change the current rule. The Cincinnati Bengals proved that by winning in OT against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. The Bengals’ defense stopped Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense from converting on downs. Ultimately the Bengals kicked a field goal and advanced to the Super Bowl.

This unique proposal was jointly presented by the Colts and the Eagles. Their proposal guarantees possession to both the teams in overtime. The competition committee will also consider its own recommendation for an overtime rules change. Any change would be voted upon at the owners’ meeting and would require 24/32 votes to pass.

Let’s see what the committee decides since it will change the whole dynamics of overtime. It’ll be interesting to watch football with new OT rules making it more difficult for teams to win on the first possessions.
