“This was a team that had everything to go further and we didn’t”- Dak Prescott painfully reflects on the heartbreaking end to the Dallas Cowboys’ season

Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys finally seemed poised to make a run at the Super Bowl this season. However, in true Cowboys fashion, the team would lose its first playoff game against the 49ers in a heartbreaking way.
Despite a 23-17 final score, the Cowboys were well and truly outplayed throughout the game. Some late-game errors by the 49ers allowed Dallas to finally work some offense and get back into the game before a crucial mistake sealed it.
With just seconds left in the game, Dallas ran a quarterback draw with no timeouts left. Prescott got a big chunk of yards down the field but in the end, too much time was used up and they couldn’t spike the ball to allow one last shot at the endzone.
It was a truly heartbreaking way for a season to end but an ending that seemed fitting for the game. The Cowboys’ offense made no sense until the final few minutes of the game. Something that Dak Prescott recently revealed, he still thinks about every day.

Dak Prescott still rues his error on the play that ended the Cowboys’ season

Appearing on the ‘Rich Eisen Show’, when Dak Prescott was asked about the ending of the season, he responded with “I think about it nonstop. Multiple times a day. It was tough. Just, expecting to go so much further, to have your season to be a lot more than it was, for it to end so suddenly and the way that it did, it’s a tough one to swallow.”
Prescott further added “There’s certain moments or games that stick with players for their careers and this was one of them. This was a team that had everything and we thought we were headed in the right direction and to do everything we needed to do to get a win and we didn’t. And the way that it ended, it just sticks with you.”
When asked about the final play, Prescott said “In retrograde I could say I should’ve went down a second earlier but in my timing and everything I thought it was right. But, you have to prepare for human error, whether the ball needs to be moved or two guys running into each other. I’ll do that now, obviously.”
Every Cowboys fan and player wishes they could have those final seconds back or even just have one extra second on the clock so that they could get that final play off. Even if they did, it would’ve been a monster task needing a touchdown as the Niners could’ve played a prevent defense and basically have the whole endzone covered.
Regardless, every loss is a learning opportunity and while this is a painful moment for the Cowboys and Dak Prescott to look back on, there’s still a lot to be taken from the performance in terms of the heart and fight that they showed. Despite their poor performance, the Cowboys were still just one play away from playing in the Divisional round.
