It didn’t take long for Ben Johnson to embrace the culture at the Chicago Bears. During his inaugural press conference as the head coach of the NFC North side, Johnson fired shots at the franchises’ bitter rivals the Green Bay Packers.

The 38-year-old was the leading candidate for the Bears job but his commitment with the Detroit Lions remained a priority. After the Lions crashed out in the NFC Divisional round game, he did not waste any time to jump ship and move to Chicago.

The Bears staff welcomed Johnson with a round of applause when he entered the facility on the first day. A day later, he faced the media for the first time and right off the bat, picked a fight with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.

I’m gonna be quite frank with you, I kind of enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year.

Ben Johnson told the press.

Rival fans remind Ben Johnson that he is part of the Bears and not Lions anymore

Johnson served as the Lions offensive coordinator in the last three years. Both he and LaFleur joined their respective organizations in 2019. LaFleur was 5-1 in his first three seasons as head coach but the Lions reversed the status quo by going 5-1 themselves from 2022-2024. The Lions also lifted the divisional title in consecutive years 2023 and 2024.

However, fans who watched Johnson’s introductory speech about enjoying wins over LaFleur and the Packers reminded him that the Bears are a different proposition and he should be careful because, unlike the Lions, the Chicago franchise’s track record is very poor.

The Packers set a franchise record of 11 straight wins against the Bears in their 104-year history until their 24-22 win in week 18. Since 1992, the Packers have been 51-16 against the Bears and an overall record of 108-96-6.

Johnson talked about tipping the balance in the Bears’ favor and claimed the squad is a sleeping giant waiting to be unleashed.

I felt like this place was a sleeping giant. To be honest with you, I personally was more concerned about the Chicago Bears than I was anybody else in this division.

Ben Johnson said.

The Bears have the 2024 first-overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams as their quarterback. Even though they finished the season with a 5-12 record, Williams had a decent rookie season by completing 351 passes (62.5% completion), 3541 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.

Johnson needs work to do, and that starts with fixing the offensive line. Williams was sacked 68 times, losing a total of 466 yards in the process (most by any QB in 2024).
