NFL Twitter calls out Ben Johnson for cracking jokes on Packers’ Matt LaFleur – “Crash and burn written all over it”

It didn’t take long for Ben Johnson to embrace the culture at the Chicago Bears. During his inaugural press conference as the head coach of the NFC North side, Johnson fired shots at the franchises’ bitter rivals the Green Bay Packers.
The 38-year-old was the leading candidate for the Bears job but his commitment with the Detroit Lions remained a priority. After the Lions crashed out in the NFC Divisional round game, he did not waste any time to jump ship and move to Chicago.
The Bears staff welcomed Johnson with a round of applause when he entered the facility on the first day. A day later, he faced the media for the first time and right off the bat, picked a fight with Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
“To be quite frank with you, I kinda enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year.”

Rival fans remind Ben Johnson that he is part of the Bears and not Lions anymore
Johnson served as the Lions offensive coordinator in the last three years. Both he and LaFleur joined their respective organizations in 2019. LaFleur was 5-1 in his first three seasons as head coach but the Lions reversed the status quo by going 5-1 themselves from 2022-2024. The Lions also lifted the divisional title in consecutive years 2023 and 2024.
However, fans who watched Johnson’s introductory speech about enjoying wins over LaFleur and the Packers reminded him that the Bears are a different proposition and he should be careful because, unlike the Lions, the Chicago franchise’s track record is very poor.
This has crash and burn written all over it.

The Packers set a franchise record of 11 straight wins against the Bears in their 104-year history until their 24-22 win in week 18. Since 1992, the Packers have been 51-16 against the Bears and an overall record of 108-96-6.
Johnson talked about tipping the balance in the Bears’ favor and claimed the squad is a sleeping giant waiting to be unleashed.

Also, he may deny it, but Matt LaFleur is absolutely going to remember what Ben Johnson said here today for a long time. It won’t age well.

Lmaooo every bears coach says this and gets embarrassed

Bears obsessed with the Packers, while the Packers don't think about them at all.
— Steve Sonn (@stevesonn) January 22, 2025
Bears coaches have been taking barbs at the Packers for half my life. 🥱🥱

Just another grave to dance on when he’s fired in 3 years. Mark it down.

Surely this will not backfire

uh your new team just got their first win against Lafleur in a nothing game. 11-1 best of luck with that

So tired of hearing this shit from new bears coaches and executives. It’s totally hollow pandering to the dumbest fanbase in the world. You have three division rivals, they all matter equally. Beat them all.

The Packers continue to be every other NFC Norths team Super Bowl.

Packers fans taking time out of their day to watch Ben Johnson get introduced as the Bears new coach, and then claiming they live rent free in our heads when he mentions them. I don't recall having an opinion on Matt LaFleur's intro. Who's living rent free now?

The Bears have the 2024 first-overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams as their quarterback. Even though they finished the season with a 5-12 record, Williams had a decent rookie season by completing 351 passes (62.5% completion), 3541 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.
Johnson needs work to do, and that starts with fixing the offensive line. Williams was sacked 68 times, losing a total of 466 yards in the process (most by any QB in 2024).
