Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill one of the main frontrunners to become the MVP this season along with Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy
Hill will need to have a minimum of 114.5 yards per game if he stands to break the record set by Calvin ‘Megatron’ Johnson in 2012.

The MVP race has been getting heated this season. Before the season’s commencement, nobody could have guessed that Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy would be leaders in the MVP race. What makes this year’s MVP race crazier is that there is a wide receiver among the top 10 players in the run-up. Tyreek Hill ranks 8th in FOX Sports and MGM sports books, with odds of +2000 to win the MVP award.
Since the inception of the AP NFL MVP Honors in 1957, the award has gone to 42 quarterbacks and just 18 non-QBs. No wide receiver has ever won the award, despite the position being one of the most important ones with the most talented and athletic players. That is an insane fact, is it not? The closest a wide receiver ever came to winning the MVP was in 1998 when Randy Moss got a vote for having 1313 yards on 69 receptions and 17 touchdowns.
Will this be the first time the voters decide to make history by giving a wide receiver the MVP award? The answer to that question remains contingent on whether Tyreek Hill will be able to cross 2,000 receiving yards in the regular season. As of today, he has 97 receptions for 1,542 yards with 12 TDs. He is averaging 15.9 yards per reception. In the coming weeks, the 9-4 Miami Dolphins face the New York Jets, the Dallas Cowboys, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Buffalo Bills.
Hill will need to have a minimum of 114.5 yards per game if he stands to break the record set by Calvin ‘Megatron’ Johnson in 2012. That will be nothing short of a challenge because he will go up against the best defenses in the NFL.
In a perfect world, Hill would be crowned MVP, however, it will be hard for the voters to not consider Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy. The two have been the primary reasons for the success of their teams, the storylines are inspiring, and most importantly, they lead the league in terms of stats such as QBR and touchdowns accounted for. To make the most out of this hot betting market, the top casino apps in NJ by Carl Mansson can be one way to pounce on the opportunity.
Prescott’s case for MVP will remain contingent on the outcome of the next 5 games, especially the game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The sole criticism against him has been that the Cowboys have managed to beat just one team that is above .500 that is the Seattle Seahawks (and now Eagles after week 14), another factor will be if he can lead his team to secure the first seed in the NFC East as historically, the award has gone to quarterbacks whose teams rank atop their respective divisions.
49ers have more than one candidate for the MVP award
If the season ends today, Brock Purdy is likely to win the MVP award. Why you ask? Look at it like this, one year ago, Purdy was the last pick in the NFL Draft, fate puts him in the driver’s seat of the most complex offense in the league, and all that was expected of him was to keep the 49ers ship from sinking, but he outperformed all expectations. Within a matter of weeks of his taking over, the question within the 49ers’ organization went from “When is Jimmy Garoppolo coming back?” to “Should Jimmy Garoppolo come back?”
Sure, it is easy to discredit him because after all, he has Kyle Shanahan as his Head Coach, a proven offensive mastermind, then he has Christian McCaffrey, who is having a great year himself, and then there’s Deebo Samuel, a reliable wideout who shows up when needed. What is Purdy without any of these weapons? Would he still be playing like this if he did not have them around?
That logic is flawed. If that is the primary assumption, then no quarterback in the NFL should be worthy of winning the MVP award. Jimmy G was in this same system, and he was not able to play at the level Purdy is, one needs to watch this young man perform to understand why he deserves all the credit. His IQ is off the charts and despite being in his second year, he is acting like an experienced vet.
It is going to be a challenge to determine who of the three deserves to win this season, all 3 candidates are having the best year to date, and each of them is on track to break records, it is easy for fans to find reasons to give their favorite amongst the three an edge over the other two but the ultimate decision lies in the hands of the voters.
The final stretch of the regular season has a lot riding on it, it can make or break their case for MVP, while they are the favorites right now, fans know how unpredictable the league is, and the possibility of a dark horse candidate winning the award cannot be ruled out either. One thing is certain, it will be historical if either of the two QBs wins, but if Tyreek Hill wins, it will establish a much-needed precedent that the MVP award is not just restricted to quarterbacks.
