In a moment of heated exchange, Broncos’ head coach, Vic Fangio was seen utterly unpleased and would go onto ram his headsets in rage as Lamar Jackson was sent to run the final three yards to make it a 100-yarder game with three seconds left on the clock for Ravens. The Broncos were absolutely outplayed, outclassed and outgunned in a lopsided encounter as they were tamed by a soaring Baltimore Ravens with the scoreline reading 23-7 in favour of the latter.
Ravens’ head coach, John Harbaugh confessed that it was his idea to ask Lamar to run those final three yards with three seconds left on the clock. After an arduous game, the Broncos defenders were anticipating Jackson to take a knee and their stance seemed pretty docile. This is when the madness unfolded with Jackson charging in to complete the 100-yards run for the Ravens, leaving Fangio and Koller ballistic.
Why exactly did Lamar Jackson run instead of taking the knee?
However, there is a small background story to the same as the Ravens are in hot pursuit of the record created by Steelers’ duo of Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier who forged an incredible streak of 43 games where the Steelers managed to run for 100 yards. Standing at the edge of racking up this insane record, Harbaugh had no intentions of relinquishing as he took all the blame upon himself and asked his illustrious quarterback to run the remaining yards instead of taking the knee to post a knockout display of sportsmanship.
When Jackson was asked about the same, he quoted, “I don’t know what he was thinking. I thought we would take a knee and he said, no, we’re going for it.”
“The game was put away. ‘Double-A’ (CB Anthony Averett) caught that pick in the back of the endzone, congratulations to him, but I don’t know what coach was thinking,” he concluded by saying.
If you take a close watch at the video, Bill Kollar had a recognition of what exactly unfolded and started hollering blasphemy at the Ravens for breaking the sportsmanship code wherein Fangio was absolutely livid and threw down his headsets when Jackson completed his 5 yarder, propelling the total yards for Ravens to 102.
