Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will look to continue their unbeaten start to the 2024 season when the host NFC opponents, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for Week 9 football on Monday, November 4. Last week Andy Reid’s side eased past the Las Vegas Raiders’ challenge and have the momentum to take another W as they play in front of a packed Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs currently sit top of the AFC with an 8-0 record. While their offense has struggled, going through several changes aside from a misfiring Mahomes. 8 touchdowns and 9 interceptions is the worst start to an NFL campaign since his first year.
Regardless, he came clutch when required in the last few games. The multiple-time league MVP was recently seen with a wrapped leg, which raised questions about his availability, but he will play against the Bucs.
As for the NFC South side, they lodged back-to-back victories to start the season but since then have gone through a phase when they lost four games and won just two and currently sit with a 4-4 record.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield once again is the driving force of the Bucs offense, but he will for the second consecutive game without Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The wide receiver duo is out for the rest of the campaign after picking up injuries in week 7. Tight end Cade Otton emerged as Mayfield’s main target during the Week 8 loss to the Falcons.
Mayfield is looking forward to facing Patrick Mahomes for the first time since 2016 when Baker played for Oklahoma and Mahomes starred for Texas Tech. Even though Mahomes threw for 734 yards, the game ended 66-59 in favor of Oklahoma as Mayfield threw 545 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Why the Chiefs can win?
Despite a lackluster first half of the season from Patrick Mahomes, he is still among the favorites for the league MVP. It proves that Vegas still believes that he can go nuclear at any point, and the Buccaneers may face a full-frontal assault.
Mahomes is currently on pace for his best-ever completion percentage (68.1%), which indicates the interceptions are the result of trying to be too innovative and the constant changes in the receiver core. With All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins added to the team, he finally has a true No. 1. Hopkins looked sharp with just a few days of practice with Mahomes, and now he has almost two weeks of training under his belt.
The Chiefs’ defense, on the other hand, is among the best, and more often than not, Steve Spagnuolo’s magic has saved games from the brink of losing. They are the second-best rushing defense, allowing just 82.3 yards and 4 touchdowns, and fifth in average points allowed with just 17.3.
Why the Buccaneers can win?
Contrary to the Chiefs and despite missing big names like Evans and Godwin, the Buccaneers are the second-best passing offense in the league, averaging 258.5 yards and 21 passing touchdowns. Todd Bowles’ side averages 29.4 points per game and is the third-best red zone offense, completing 67.7% of their chances.
Mayfield is second among starting quarterbacks in passing yards with 2189 (71.1% completion rate) from 202 completions. He also rushed 29 times for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. Everything points to a high-scoring game.
The last time these two teams met was in 2022 when the Chiefs won over a Tom Brady-led Buccaneers 31-41. The Buccaneers hold an 8-7 overall record against the Chiefs. Mahomes is 2-1 in the series.
