The Minnesota Vikings have announced Kevin O’Connell as their head coach for 2022. The former Rams offensive coordinator had his stock at its highest following their Super Bowl LVI win and a couple of days later the Vikings made the announcement.
Coming off a second consecutive poor season, the Minnesota Vikings fired Mike Zimmer, concluding his 8-year tenure with the team. In his time, he was known for building fast, physical defenses that could compete with any unit in the league.
However, in his last two seasons, that prototypical Mike Zimmer defense was nowhere to be seen. The offense on the other hand took a step up thanks to the ever-reliable Kirk Cousins to Justin Jefferson connection.
Hiring a well-respected offensive coordinator as their new head coach comes as a bit of a shock. While O’Connell will have a whale of a time working with an offense that consists of Kirk Cousins, Justin Jefferson and Dalvin Cook, it doesn’t really answer the issue of defensive play.
Nonetheless, the Minnesota Vikings were very happy to have found their new head coach as their general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah expressed recently.

In a recent statement, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah stated “As I spent time with Kevin during the interview process, it became immediately clear he will be a great partner in building this football team for long-term success. He understands what is critical to leading a team that wins at the highest level, and he has an ability to simplify the complex, which helps us in problem-solving in all football areas.”
The Minnesota Vikings president/owner, Mark Wilf, was quoted saying “We are ecstatic to add Kevin as our head coach. He is a strong leader, an innovative coach and an excellent communicator. Vikings fans should be excited for the future of this team under Kevin’s direction.”
Both Wilf and Adofo-Mensah mentioning a bright future in the same sentence as O’Donnell is to be expected but still, it shows great faith in his ability and what he has done. As of now, there are no mentions about coaching schemes and coordinators but everything should reveal itself in the coming days.
