“What has he done?” – Stephen A. Smith has some tough questions for Pete Carroll who ‘went off’ on team owners at the league’s meeting
Stephen A. Smith and Pete Carroll
It’s no newsflash that there is deep-seated discrimination done by the team owners while hiring coaching staff. This issue blew to a whole another level when Brian Flores filed a lawsuit against the NFL and a few other teams that he was racially discriminated while he was interviewing for a head coach position.
Everybody in the league from players to head coaches have voiced their opinion on the discrimination and have urged the league to stop it at all cost. Recently Pete Carroll, head coach of the Seattle Seahawks reportedly “went off” against the team owners over their insufficient hiring of minority candidates.
“I’m not letting Pete Carroll off the hook” – Stephen A. Smith wants to know what Pete Carroll has done regarding the discrimination in coach’s hiring process
Pete Carroll pointed the gun right at team owners at the league’s meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, last week. Carroll spoke for about 10 minutes during the meeting which was a day after the NFL announced that all 32 teams must hire a minority offensive assistant coach for the 2022 season.
While some have commended the Seahawks’ head coach for his bold take on a serious matter, Stephen A. Smith isn’t that impressed with him. “I’m not letting Pete Carroll off the hook. Pete Carroll is one of the few coaches in the NFL that has had some degree of control. What has he done?
“Yes, he’s had black individuals that were defensive coordinators but he also showed the trend of white offensive coordinators usually getting picked up and granted head coaching opportunities. How many offensive coordinators has Pete Carroll had? How many people has he put in that position? Yes, he says the right thing but what he actually does I believe is a question mark,” Smith said on First Take.
The NFL is trying to make amends by making teams hire a minority coach. While Carroll has asked some tough questions to team owners, he should also take a look in the mirror and ask what he has done to change the hiring process. You should always lead by example is what Stephen A. Smith was basically trying to say to Pete Carroll.
There are a whole lot of issues taking place in the league that needs to change since it has been tarnishing the NFL name all around the world.
