The situation between Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns is a confusing one. The Browns acquired quarterback Deshaun Watson in a blockbuster deal with the Houston Texans which would guarantee Watson $230 million over five years.
However on the other hand, they have Baker Mayfield as their backup quarterback and are still paying him a whopping $19 million per year making him the highest paid back-up quarterback in the league. Baker Mayfield is in the last year of his rookie deal.

The Cleveland Browns added yet another quarterback to their roster in the form of former Pittsburgh Steelers man Joshua Dobbs. Shannon Sharpe on the Undisputed: Skip and Shannon show has said that it was clear to him from day one that Baker Mayfield won’t be on the roster.
“They got Watson, they got Brissett, they got Dobbs. What other confirmation do you need? I don’t need no other confirmation because the moment they signed Deshaun Watson with a $230 million guaranteed, we knew Baker Mayfield was not going to be on the roster! Andrew Berry can say whatever he wants to keep Baker Mayfield’s trade value high but it’s going to be more than a fourth or fifth round pick Skip”, he said.
Shannon Sharpe had earlier said as well that Baker Mayfield wasn’t going to be at the Cleveland Browns to be a backup option. The Browns openly showed interest in Deshaun Watson so it shows where they stand.
“I don’t know the purpose of having a $19 million backup. Baker Mayfield was the number one overall draft pick five years ago. He doesn’t want to be a backup. He doesn’t want to be in Cleveland anymore. So (he’s saying) not only are you trying to make me the backup, you’re trying to make me play in a place that I don’t want to be.”
“Both parties have said it’s best that they go their separate ways. Baker said in the interview…I think he texted or talked to Adam Schefter. He put out this statement thanking the Cleveland Browns as if he was leaving in Cleveland. The Cleveland Browns openly publicly courted Deshaun Watson and eventually signing Deshaun Watson.”
