“I take this sh*t seriously”: When QB Derek Anderson lashed out at a reporter & stormed off the podium during press meet
Derek Anderson
Derek Matthew Anderson is a name to reckon with in the world of the NFL. The star quarterback played for 14 seasons in the NFL. After registering impressive numbers in his stint at the college level at Oregon State, he was roped in by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft.
A 2007 Pro Bowler, Anderson featured for the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, and the Buffalo Bills as well before he decided to call it quits in 2018. Today, we are going to talk about one incident in Anderson’s career which led to his outburst in front of the media.
“I wasn’t laughing about anything”: Derek Anderson on his outburst
Back in 2010 when the Cardinals were going through a rather rough patch, Derek was spotted smiling while sitting on the sidelines in one of the games. This led to reporters repeatedly asking him why was laughing when his team was getting absolutely hammered.
Not impressed with the line of questioning, Anderson suddenly lashed out at the press. “What Deuce and I talk about is nobody else’s business,” Anderson had said. When a reporter asked what was so funny when the team was down 18 points in the fourth quarter, Anderson said, “It wasn’t funny, I wasn’t laughing about anything.”
When the reporter claimed that the camera showed him laughing, Anderson responded angrily by saying, “that’s fine, that’s fine, I am not laughing about it. You think this is funny, I take this sh*t seriously. Real serious, I put my heart and soul into this sh*t every single week.”
Anderson’s pitch went further up and he said, “I don’t want to get out there and get embarrassed on Monday Night football in front of everybody. I am telling you right now, Deuce and I were talking.” When the reporter further asked what was the context of the chat with Deuce, Anderson said sorry and walked away.
He maintains that he wasn’t actually laughing or smiling but was just talking to his fellow teammate. While people may have contrary opinions on what Anderson actually did, one can’t deny that this outburst led to quite an outrage in the press.
