Chris Smith is a former American football player who played as a defensive end in the NFL for 8 years. The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The 6’1″ defensive end spent 3 years in Jacksonville and raked up 4.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 19 total tackles.
Following his 3 year stint with the Jaguars, Chris Smith spent the next five years in the league with four different teams. His best season came in 2018 when he played for the Cleveland Browns. Most recently, the defensive end spent the 2021 season with the Houston Texans registering 1.5 sacks and 8 total tackles. That was the last time the league saw the talented defensive end. He was however in the squad of the Seattle Sea Dragons in the 2022 XFL season.
Unfortunately, in devastating news, the 31-year-old former NFL player passed away as reported by the Cleveland Browns and his agent Drew Rosenhaus on Tuesday. The cause of the death remains unknown.
“Chris was one of the kindest people, teammates, and friends we’ve had in the organization,” the Browns said in their statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.” The sudden demise of the former NFL defensive end has left his family in a dire situation. Was Chris Smith married?
No, the former Jaguars defensive end Chris Smith was not married. Smith’s girlfriend Petara Codero died in a car accident back in 2019. The accident happened when Chris’ supercar broke down and they had to pull over.
Smith’s girlfriend Petara exited the vehicle but another car smashed into their Lamborghini and her at the same time. Petera was transferred to a local Cleveland hospital where she was pronounced dead by the doctors.
The driver who caused the accident admitted to consuming alcohol before the crash but the cops said they wouldn’t charge her since her blood alcohol level was under the legal limit and she didn’t drive recklessly.
Chris Smith and Petara Codero had one children together
Chris Smith had three children including one daughter with his girlfriend Petara Codero. His third child Haven Harris Smith was born in August 2019 and was just four months old when she lost her mother in a car accident.
“That night we were talking about Haven, having a family, taking trips and stuff like that, and then the next thing you know she was gone,” Smith told Charlotte’s WSOC-TV back in 2020 about the accident. “So it’s like, ‘Man, God, really?”
Smith’s sudden death has put his friends, former teammates, and family in a dire situation. Many NFL players including his former teammates Baker Mayfield, David Njoku and the Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson all paid tribute to Smith on social media.
