Tight ends are one of the most underrated athletes on the football field. They are an extra offensive lineman who also knows how to run routes and catch the pigskin. Due to its versatility, it is also one of the toughest positions to play in the NFL. You have to be big and strong enough to block the defensive linemen and you also have to be elusive and quick to run routes and catch the ball.

Since it is very tough to be a good tight end, there are only a handful of players in the NFL currently that could be considered elite tight ends. The Chiefs have Travis Kelce, the 49ers have George Kittle and the NY Giants have Darren Waller. Other than these players, there are not so many great TEs in the league currently.

But if a team wants to get an elite tight end they can use the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft to select one. The 2023 class is one of the deepest TE classes in recent draft history. There are plenty of talented tight ends in this draft but the Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer stands tall among them.

The Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer is considered to be one of the best TE prospects to come out of college in recent times. Mayers was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school in Kentucky and was the No.2 TE prospect in the entire nation.

“Mayers is just an exceptional route runner, and he had 17 contested catches — more than any other tight end in this class — the past year. And he’s a bulldozer when he has the ball in his hands after the catch. So you’re bringing in a guy who is an inline blocker, will help your run game, and will be a security blanket,” the renowned Draft analyst Todd McShay said about Mayers.

The 6’4″ 249 pounds athlete is a behemoth of a man and has all the tools in the bag to become the best tight end in the NFL one day. During his three-year stint with the Fighting Irish, Mayers had 2099 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.

Besides, Mayer finished the 2022 season as PFF’s top-graded tight end (92.5) in college football. Thanks to his physical attributes and athletic abilities, the dynamic TE is currently considered the No.1 tight end prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft and is projected to go in the middle to the late first round, which is fairly high for his position.
