The 2023 NFL Draft has been an interesting event so far. From Will Levis sliding down on the draft boards to Jake Campbell getting selected on Day 1, it has been a totally chaotic event. Especially, the Detroit Lions’ choices have been the most puzzling ones so far. Nevertheless, after making some questionable choices on Day 1, the Lions ended up drafting the Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker on Day 2.
The Lions surprised a lot of people by trading down a few spots instead of drafting the highly touted defensive lineman Jalen Carter. Furthermore, after trading down, the Lions shockingly selected Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs with their 12th overall pick. In addition, they used another first-round pick on the Iowa linebacker, Jake Campbell. Both prospects were projected to be drafted on Day 2.
Maybe Texas running back Bijan Robinson getting off-the-board inside the Top 10 led to the Lions reaching for the second-best running back in the league. The Lions picked great players on Day 1 but it’s just that they were picked way earlier than anybody would’ve guessed.

Brad Holmes, the general manager of the Detroit Lions, continued to surprise everyone with his draft choices by drafting the Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta when better tight end prospects Michael Mayer and Darnell Washington were still on the board.
Nevertheless, in the third round, the Lions made a sensible choice to draft the Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Hendon Hooker. During his final season at Tennessee, Hooker had 3135 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and just 2 interceptions while completing 69.6% of his passes. He is certainly a great prospect but an ACL injury in his final season and his age led the 25-year-old quarterback to slide all the way to the third round before the Lions scooped him up.
Will Hendon Hooker be the starting QB for the Lions in 2023?
The Detroit Lions currently have quarterbacks, Jared Goff and Nate Suffield, under contract for the 2023 season. And they have just added Hendon Hooker to the QB depth chart.
Jared Goff has been the starting QB for the Lions in the past two seasons. Goff has significantly improved during his second season with the Lions. He put up a Pro Bowl season in 2022 as he registered 4438 passing yards and 27 touchdowns while completing 65.1% of his passes.
Goff will most likely be the starting QB for the Lions in the 2023 NFL season. But Goff has just two years left on his contract and if Hendon Hooker turned out to be the guy, the Lions could move on from Goff before the 2024 season. But for now, barring any injuries to Goff, Hooker will sit behind the 3-time Pro Bowl and learn the Lions’ offense.
