Why are there 31 teams in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft?
Miami Dolphins and the NFL draft
The NFL 2023 draft is all set to take place in a few days’ time and is arguably one of the most crucial junctures for the franchises ahead of what promises to be a cracker of a footballing 2023/24 season. Historically, the NFL draft has been the best way for franchises to recruit college freshmen who would improve their roster further.
The NFL draft is held for seven rounds, in which franchises are given a position in the drafting order owing to their reverse standings in the previous year’s footballing season. The idea behind such a move is to ensure parity, with the worst-off team from the past season getting the first pick in the first round, and the Super Bowl winners receiving the 32nd pick in the first round.
The 2023 NFL draft will see the Carolina Panthers have hold of the first-pick rights courtesy of their massive trade with the Chicago Bears, while the Super Bowl LVII winners, Kansas City Chiefs select a No.31 overall pick in the first round. This begs the question, as to why there would only be 31 picks made in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft instead of the traditional 32.
Miami Dolphins do not have a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft
This is because the Miami Dolphins were stripped of their first-round picks for violating the league’s tampering policies. In addition to losing their first-round picks in the 2023 NFL draft, they also forfeited their third-round picks in 2024.
In 2022, the Dolphins were found guilty of making illegitimate contact with the New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. Minority owner Bruce Beal also attracted a suspension for his troubles after it emerged that he took the role of a primary in making conversations with Brady during his time at Tampa Bay.
The NFL claimed that the Dolphins continued to have conversations with Brady in 2019, 2020 and again in 2021 when the quarterback had moved to Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dolphins owner, Stephen Ross was handed a suspension which lasted for a couple of months alongside a hefty fine of $1.5 million.
During the unprecedented conversations as termed by Roger Goodell during his statement on the issue, the Dolphins wanted Brady to join the organization in the form of a partner, and a football executive. The Dolphins will now have to be satisfied with their topmost pick coming in only at No.51 due to their penalties from the past season.
