The Los Angeles Rams (10-7) and Minnesota Vikings (14-3) face-off in Arizona on Monday, January 13, 2025 in Wild Card Round of the 2024 NFL post season. The No. 4 Rams clinched the NFC West with ten wins while the Vikings lost out on the opportunity to win the division title and a bye week in the regular season finale against the Detroit Lions.

Earlier, the Vikings-Rams game was supposed to be held at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California – home to the Rams. The deadly Palisades fire, which started on 7th January, has led to the destruction of countless structures and more than a hundred thousand people evacuating their homes. The NFL then decided to shift the game to the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona in the interest of public safety.

The Los Angeles Rams are returning once again for the playoff against a NFC North opponent. Last year, the Rams sustained a defeat at the hands of the Detroit Lions who went on to play the NFC Divisional Game. Since returning to the City of Angels in 2016, the Rams have failed to make playoffs only thrice while winning the Super Bowl once.

In 2021, the Rams aided by Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in the championship game. Sean McVay made his second Super Bowl appearance with the Rams with Kevin O’Connell, who is now the HC of Vikings.

In the regular season meet-up earlier this season, Sean McVay had the upper hand defeating the Vikings 20-30 at their home turf. The Vikings then set their sights on yet another streak to extend their dominance in the season.

Why could the Minnesota Vikings win?

The Minnesota Vikings have been blazing hot all season long. They went tooth and nail with the Detroit Lions until the very last game of the season to finalise the seedings in the NFC North and the confirmation of the No. 1 seed. The Vikings have lost only three duels all season – twice to the Lions and once to the Rams.

The Vikings have a strong chance to win this game thanks to their dynamic offensive duo of quarterback Sam Darnold and receiver Justin Jefferson. Darnold has been exceptional this season, finishing fifth in the league with 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdowns, along with a solid 60.6 QBR. He’s delivered multiple passing touchdowns in 12 games, showcasing his consistency and ability to lead the offense.

Meanwhile, Jefferson continues to be one of the NFL’s premier playmakers. Ranking second in receiving yards (1,533) and sixth in receptions (103) and touchdowns (10), he’s a deep-threat weapon with 28 catches of 20-plus yards. His standout performance in Week 8, where he recorded 115 yards on eight catches against the Rams, highlights his game-changing potential.

The Rams, although a dangerous opponent, seem to have slowed down a bit as the season came to an almost close. McVay hasn’t delved into his playbook as much as he did before – evident in Matthew Stafford’s 200 yards less games in the last three games. It is not to say McVay would be as same as the regular season but the Vikings do have some time to prepare and predict the animosity of the Rams offense.

Why could the Los Angeles Rams win?

Los Angeles Rams were one of the best teams to watch in the second half of the season when they bounced off a dismal start to the season to clinch their division and earn a spot in the playoffs. They had defeated the Vikings once before in the season – a game which saw Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua and some key players finding their footing after injuries. The offense has gotten much better since then.

The 2021 Super Bowl MVP winner and OPOY Kupp is back with more agility, shaving off his injury ridden start. He will become instrumental in Rams’ chances to make a deep run despite Stafford’s late fading away in numbers. Kupp is highly effective against zone coverage, which is a key element of Brian Flores’ defensive scheme. While Puka Nacua stretches the field on the outside, Kupp is likely to exploit the middle, where his route-running precision can shine.

Rams head coach Sean McVay may design plays where tight end Tyler Higbee clears out defenders, creating space for Kupp to thrive underneath. Additionally, if Flores focuses on limiting Nacua’s impact, it could open up more favorable matchups for Kupp, allowing him to be a major factor in the game.
