The Los Angeles Chargers face the Houston Texans at the NRG Stadium in Houston to kickoff the Wild Card round of the NFL. The Houston Texans finished first in the AFC South and the Los Angeles Chargers qualified with the first wildcard spot.
The Chargers and Texans will meet for the first time in postseason history, though the Chargers previously played a playoff game in Texas. In 1960, during the inaugural AFL season, the Chargers faced the Houston Oilers in the league championship, losing 24-16. Now, 65 years later, they return to Houston for a Wild Card matchup against the Texans.
The Texans and Chargers last squared off in Houston during the 2022 season, when Los Angeles claimed a 34-24 victory. In their brief head-to-head history, the Chargers have dominated, winning six of nine games against the Texans, a franchise established in 2001.
Jim Harbaugh, who guided the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl and won an NCAA national championship with the University of Michigan, joined the Chargers in early 2024 and transformed a disappointing 5-12 season from 2023. Under Harbaugh’s leadership, the Chargers did a 180 from 2-2 start to end the season on a high note.
On the other hand, DeMeco Ryans has been leading the Texans since last year – a season which saw the Texans win their first playoff win since 2019. He has emulated the same fate in the regular season, taking the Houston side to playoffs once again. He would hope they could go further than their last year record.

How can the Houston Texans win?
The Houston Texans defense are a solid team that has posed a huge challenge to the opposing teams. The Los Angeles Chargers could face a great test from the impressive duo, Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson who has 10+ sacks this season. On the opposite end, the LA Chargers have struggled all season to protect their quarterback, who was sacked 41 times.
C.J. Stroud, starting all 17 games this season threw for 3,727 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while also improving his mobility with 233 rushing yards. The 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year already boasts playoff experience, having appeared in two postseason games last year. He played a pivotal role in leading Houston to its first playoff victory since 2019, delivering a standout performance against the Browns with 274 passing yards and three touchdowns.
How can the Los Angeles Chargers win?
The Chargers can take advantage of the CJ Stroud’s troubles this season. After throwing only five interceptions as a rookie, CJ Stroud has thrown 12 this year, which has hurt the offense. Among the two of them, the Texans has the better defense but the Chargers are tied third amongst all teams for most turnovers forced. A turnover could go a long way in a postseason match. Speaking about the Chargers defense, they are also the highest scoring defense.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has only thrown three interceptions. Herbert finished the season as one among the best ten quarterbacks. He has 3870 passing yards, throwing 332-of-504 and 23 touchdowns, and has continuously improved his performance, bettered with JK Dobbins’ come back. In his two games since returning, he has carried the ball 37 times for 139 yards and a touchdown, bringing much-needed balance to the offense.
