The Jacksonville Jaguars hold the No.1 overall in the draft for the second consecutive year. Even after drafting QB Trevor Lawrence as the first overall in the 2021 draft, the Jaguars still ended at the bottom of the table.
It’s being touted that Michigan defensive end Adian Hutchinson would go first in the 2022 NFL draft. Now, rumors suggest that Travon Walker might go as the No.1 overall in Las Vegas in a few weeks.
Could Travon Walker go No.1 overall in the 2022 draft?
The hype of Travon Walker going No.1 overall caught fire right after the NFL combine. Walker stands tall at 6-foot-5 and weighs 272 pounds. Despite his weight and size, the Georgia Bulldogs DE ran a blazing 4.51-second 40-yard dash, while also recording a 6.89-second three-cone drill and a 4.32-second 20-yard shuttle drill. Additionally, he recorded a 35.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-three-inch broad jump.
“This Travon Walker at No. 1 overall talk feels a lot like Jadeveon Clowney in 2014. This guy is just so athletic, so gifted that you have to take a chance on him,” Trevor Sikkema, analyst for the PFF said while discussing the possibility of Walker going first overall on Good Morning Football.
“We track pass rush win rate over at PFF. Guys like (George) Karlaftis, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Hutchinson there are right around 25% in the pass rushing win rate. Travon Walker – 10%. He’s all the way down there. That’s not a volume stat either.” In 2021, Walker started 15 games for Georgia, helping the Bulldogs win a national championship. Walker amassed 37 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, two passes deflected, and one fumble recovery.
“Thought for him to get the No.1 overall hype that tells me, the teams in this draft, they are aiming for the fences. They want home runs,” Sikkema concluded. Most scouts and analysts consider Walker to be “raw” as a pass-rusher given his incredible combination of size and speed. With the right coaching, it won’t be a stretch to say that Walker might rise to be one of the NFL’s elite young pass rushers.
