Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever drawing viewers to WNBA despite NFL Brazil game

The NFL season has just finished its opening week. Prime among those games was the Kickoff Game and the first game played in Brazil. That game, held on Friday, drew in a lot of viewers. It meant other leagues such as the WNBA would suffer with viewers preferring to watch the sport that returned after seven months. But with Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on a roll, it turned out better than expected.

The Fever welcomed the championship favorite Minnesota Lynx to their home court. With the way they have been playing in the second half of the season, fans tuned in to see the star rookie take the game to the Lynx. As per Sports Media Watch, that game averaged 1.26 million on ION. A staggering number considering the NFL International game drew more than 14 million viewers of their own.

This happens to be the 22nd game of this WNBA season which had more than a million viewers watching. Out of that 19 are courtesy of Caitlin Clark. It goes to show that the rookie superstar is living up to the hype from her college days. In fact, her last three NCAA games drew more viewers than what the NFL could muster from their game in Brazil.

In those games, her elite play drew that number. Now, the same elite basketball has brought her into the MVP conversation. If Clark and her Indiana Fever teammates can continue their excellent run into the playoffs, basketball fans could overshadow the NFL in some circumstances.

Caitlin Clark and Fever could leapfrog A’ja Wilson and Aces

Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever have four games left in the regular season. The next two home games are against the defending champions Las Vegas Aces. The problem is that MVP frontrunner A’ja Wilson missed her previous game due to an ankle injury.

With a good chance of her continuing to rest for at least one more game, the Fever could take advantage and win. In fact, the Fever can win both games as their form suggests. That could place the Indiana side in a formidable position to reach 5th place in the WNBA standings.

Considering that the Las Vegas Aces have a tougher remaining schedule compared to 5th place Seattle Storm, they could fall to 6th. This will give the Fever a favorable 1st round playoff matchup against the Storm.
