Following his captaincy at the age of 24, Alex Ovechkin led the Washington Capitals to grab hold of Lord Stanley during the 2018 playoffs. Ovie was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy after the win to honor the league’s most valuable player in 2018. 

During the playoff, Ovie recorded 15 goals in 24 games with 27 points. The team faced their old rival Pittsburgh Penguins led by Sidney Crosby. But this time, the Caps came out victorious in face of their archrivals following their 10 past encounters.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom played a vital role in the team’s win as they washed away the Vegas Golden Knights in 5 games to win the Stanley Cup. Late on December 8, Ovechkin became the fastest NHL player to reach 1,031 career games. 

Capitals owner Ted Leonsis praised Ovechkin stating, “He deserved this. No one worked harder. No one was more loyal. He’s a really, really high character, beautiful person.” 

His entire family, the way they’ve raised him. The integrity that he has. The way he came back this year, so focused to get a Cup. Him and [center Nicklas] Backstrom, no one deserved it more.”
